Hello all!

Firstly, I've T for a few years now and learnt to live with it, but have periods of it becoming louder or "episodes" of it flaring up, but otherwise it's been ok. It's mainly in my left ear.

But this new problem started yesterday...
Only started in my right ear - It started with what felt like clogged ears, felt like I was underwater, everything sounded weird and "bassy"
I started to feel light headed and a bit sick, so went to lay down and fell asleep.
Upon waking up, my left ear was humming like mad - with the same feelings, but worse.

Sometimes, my ear feels wet?

I haven't had a full on cold, but I have had a sore throat for a couple of days, could be a sign of a virus causing chaos? Blocked sinus? But my nose is clear and I can breathe through it fine?

Would just like to say, I think this forum is amazing and very helpful from what I've been reading, before signing up.

Thank you for reading, any comments would put me at ease as I'm panicking a little!
I wish you all good health!

Hi Will,

It sounds a lot like a virus. I get them periodically.

I had one at the start of the year that lasted for weeks, my ear felt blocked and my hearing dropped right down because of the blockage (fluid). I didn't particularly feel full of cold, still managed to go to the gym.

I don't think there is cause to worry from what you say, ear problems can make you unbalanced because of the role the ear plays in balance. Just get it checked out by your doctor so they can take a look inside the ear. They will probably give you something for the virus once they have checked it out, just make sure to talk about the tinnitus and ask for an antibiotic that isn't ototoxic.

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply.

Yep that makes sense, will get myself to the docs next Tuesday, as being bank holiday I'll just have to stick it out.

It just worries me that it's affecting the T that I already have, and that I'm hoping that when my ears clear, the noise will settle back down to normal.... or what I know as normal anyway!

Can you explain ototoxic please? Is it an ingredient or a side effect of antibiotics?

Thanks.

Rather than me chop and paste, here are two articles on ototoxicity http://www.asha.org/public/hearing/Ototoxic-Medications/ - http://vestibular.org/ototoxicity

There is probably nothing that can be done to stop you worrying about it, that's one thing that all of us with tinnitus are prone to when anything happens around our ears, to one degree or another.

My experience and something you will see a lot in the threads here, is that the tinnitus subsides after the infection clears. Anything that messes with that area is always likely to make tinnitus louder until it clears unfortunately.

Thanks for those links, will be reading up. Even with T for a number of years, It's good to learn something new.

You're right, can't help but worry about it, just trying to crack on regardless.

And that's good to hear (no pun intended :p) I think patience is key here, until I can get to the docs on Tuesday.

An update - Decided to go to a walk in clinic and wait, saw the GP who prescribed me some Amoxicillin?

He looked in my ear, couldn't see anything wrong - I was hoping he would.

But anyway, I'll be taking these for now.

I did ask about Ototoxins, these are ok according to him.

Also, he did mention the tubes (can't remember the name) can play up.

I hope this all dies down soon!

Eustachian tubes probably.

Yeah, I am pretty sure amoxicillin is fine. I think the ---mycin are the ones to avoid in general.

I didn't mention above but I have a soft cold at the moment and I have a hiss in the left ear. I know I have a bit of an infection because I can feel it in my teeth, where I had what was probably a pointless root canal years ago.

The joys of tinnitus :)

Eustachian tubes - that's them!

Good to know these are ok, I'll do the full course and see how I go.

Sorry to hear about the cold, I'm convinced i'm going the same way, because the sore throat is still kicking about.

@Will89 ,
Steam inhalation will help clear your tubes ,

Love glynis

Thanks, Glynis! I'll try that one.
