Cause of Tinnitus
Noise Induced due to music production and motorbikes.
Hi there,

I recently travelled from Scotland to Southern Ireland for a wedding. I was a guest at the estate that had been rented for four days with around 40 people; however, for the ceremony and party there were around 130 people in attendance.

I travelled by ferry and spent around 10 hours either sailing or driving on each travel day. Over that weekend I drank each day and socialised from early morning until late at night. On the wedding day, I went to the ceremony, the reception and the party and left when the band came on about 9pm. In any particularly noisey environment I wore my ACS 26 dB plugs and took breaks every now and then.

My ears were sore when I returned home - which I attribute to being around noise all weekend for the first time in ages - but my tinnitus is back to it's baseline. No extra noises have stuck around, no hyperacusis, no overwhelming anxiety - just some nice memories with my girlfriend.

For eighteen months I have had noise induced tinnitus which is fairly severe and reactive to all sounds. I hear ringing, hissing across my head and pulsatile sounds all day - all of which are pretty much unmaskable and constantly audible (even over my car engine). Three months into my tinnitus I went to a wedding which did further damage my ears; however, I was not as careful then. Fifthteen months later I went to a bigger event, for longer and - with a better approach - I'm fine, despite previous set backs.

This is not to advise anyone, just sharing a positive experience which may help offer some insight for anyone who has weddings to attend in the future.

Take care,

Ross.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Seems like you are habituated. How long did it take you? How long did you experience and anxiety?

Thanks @Jack Straw I think it's important to share the positives.

@TLion I'm definitely not habituated to my tinnitus, it's very much something I deal with day-to-day; some days are better than others.

However, the anxiety gets easier to deal with by doing the things that worry you, by being smart in loud situations and be incorporating tinnitus into your life rather than avoiding living. For example, I've just bought a flat which I'm currently renovating, initially i was fearful of getting stuck in, but I've been at it for two weeks and I'm ok. I just take more breaks than I would have previously.

For me it's about the little victories, and then knowing that if I can attend a wedding and be fine, then maybe there's some more things I can do - just got to give them a go...sensibly.

Ross

Hello.

At first my congrats about your little victory @Ross McLauchlan :) I think you should be careful even if you protect your ears and remember sometimes it can be too loud (ie loud rock concerts in small area, clubs, etc).

From my own perspective - I have got noise induced tinnitus and I was at several weddings and concerts (only open space) and everything was ok. I'm using Alpine Music Safe Pro plugs (gold filter, sometimes silver). I never permanently worsened my T but I have had one spike after wedding (only at night after).

Unfortunately my T is getting worse and worse and I developed mild H since end of June and now I have to avoid parties etc. because I'm afraid of another worsening :/

Be careful guys but try to live normally!

Good to see a nice positive post

Agreed yes don't let Tinnitus run your life. Yes be cautious. I just pick and choose the loud places I go to and not avoid them altogether which some people do. If I do go out to Music venues I do take necessary precautions like not staying at the back etc . Admittedly my tinnitus has got worse but probably would have got worse anyway as cannot just isolate myself from all sounds. Other sounds seems to make my Tinnitus worse like clapping and large crowds of people.
