Are there any signs at all that tinnitus is not permanent?

Mine has gone from being a beep the entire day, to maybe only 60 percent of the day, and the rest is a white noise now. It's lessened a bit since the 6th of last month.

I am just unsure if it's still wax, and whenever I see posts about wax they say that if it's hardened on the ear drum, wax removal kit's wont help it.

Did a doctor tell you that you have heavy wax build up? This one is kind of easy. If you think that your tinnitus is caused by wax, go to an ENT and get it removed. I have dealt with ears that naturally build heavy wax for decades. My opinion: Wax removal is for professionals. You can screw up your ears with syringing, wax removal, drops,,etc.

I agree with LadyDi. Earwax, especially if it's hardened should be removed at ENT. There, they will use microsuction which is the safest method of removal especially if you have tinnitus or other ear problems. Make sure you use olive oil eardrops 3x day for up to 10 days before the procedure to soften the wax.

Some people that have microsuction done at one of these walk-in clinics are not advised to use olive oil to soften the wax before the procedure, it is then problems can sometimes arise. Making tinnitus worse or causing it.

My main issue is when this happened and I went to the first doctor, he said he seen no wax what so ever, so i'm afraid maybe there was some noise trauma that had happened, I had a microsuction for 3s econds on the other ear, and it scared me, and now there is a faint noise in that ear now, I am just terrified of making it worse, or not acting soon enough because they say it can become permanent. Ugh! today its been extremely low so far, It's just he didn't ask any symptoms at all, just said "Oh it's probably hearing loss" My GP wants to do an irrigation..

Yeah mine always seem to have an extreme amount of wax, its just my first doctor said he seen no wax at all, I am afraid because they want to microsuction, I had it done for 3 seconds but said stop and left, because it was so loud, and he didn't ask any symptoms and I heard that while suctioning is safe, it can cause tinnitus.. I'm so fucking insure.. as is right now its fine, its not even louder then typing on a keyboard softly,..

Might I add he didn't advise olive oil, just shot some water with ear wax softener in my ear for 10 seconds then started immediately afterwards.

It probably had Hydrogen peroxide in it, which is much more harsh than olive oil. That'd be why.

Well not he didn't advise I use anything, he did it right there on the day of

Because peroxide is fast acting and much harsher, i don't think it needs to be used over a few days like less harsh drops. He would have mixed it in the water.

In my opinion, anything done in haste is never good. There is no proof that what this person done caused the increase in tinnitus but it's good its calmed down. If I were you I would not let this person near my ears again! I advise you not to use any earwax removal kit. If you have hardened earwax in future, apply olive oil eardrops 3x a day for 10 days, then go to ENT and have it removed by microsuction. If you just have a normal build-up of wax that hasn't compacted and isn't hard. Normal ear irrigation at a GP surgery should be good enough but, you must still use olive oil 3x day for 10 days before irrigation.

In general speaking, i've had many general practitioner doctors say my ears aren't that bad..

ENT pulled chunks out.
So it may be worth getting a specialist to check.

And irrigation is hundreds of times safer than syringing right? He didn't clean the effected ear out of tinnitus, he did the other ear which wasnt that bad, and it kinda has an echo ring, which it rings when it hears other sounds, and I had that done last thurs.

The ringing is still primarily on the left ear, and its barely a ring, just a hiss now. So I am hoping that means something, issue is I'd imagine if it were temp tinnitus my other ear wouldn't have this super low noise in it.

Before i had mine removed it was a ringing, after it became a lower hiss.. but it was strange. I guess it had been semi blocked so long normal sounds weren't getting through as much as they were after.

It took a while for my ears to adjust to the better hearing as a result of removal.

Interesting, mine is pretty blocked, can move my ear lobe around and hear it make sticky sounds, lol. so that's probably not good.

I am not saying irrigation is 100 times safer than syringing. Syringing is an old method of earwax removal which can cause problems such as tinnitus. Water is administered into the ear under pressure. Ear irrigation is much more gentle. I have variable tinnitus which can reach severe levels. I have had microsuction twice with no problems. I have had irrigation twice with no problems. Both procedures are safe in my opinion, providing olive oil is used 3 x a day for 10 days in each ear before earwax is removed.

It good that you are showing some humour and I hope you have many happy days. However, I don't mean to be a killjoy, tinnitus is no laughing matter when it becomes loud and intrusive, so be careful. Your GP is wrong. Use the eardrops for at least 3x a day for 7 - 10 days and then get ear irrigation or microsuction.

I wish you well.

I hope mine never gets worse.. but it seems to be totally random, because up until now it's only gotten better.

My go told me to put in some drops of sdoium Bicarbonate drops every oher week to stop it building up. Seems to work well.

Hi Di

Whats wrong with just using drops? My GP told me to us it for 2 weeks in December when i had really bad wax and could barely hear. I noticed great improvements after about 8 days. She told me to put a few drops in every other week to stop it building up again.

Forgot to mention tbat the tinnitus sas much worse when it was really blocked up.

Hi, @Sam Bridge: Not all drops are necessarily bad, but you need to be really careful. Some are quite caustic. I had a doc prescribe drops to me years ago that severely irritated the inside of my ear.

Mine are carbomide peroxide 6.5 percent, is that bad? Also do I have to flush it out with this rubber water shooter or do I leave it in?
