What Music Do You Most Miss Listening to?

I am / was heavily into techy fast melodic hardcore/punk, with roots in Minor Threat, Bad Religion, NOFX, etc. I still actually play in two bands, and I've been pushing my luck/nerves/ears for the last few years, but I've felt it was worth the risk, and I've actually never had an increase or spike because of it.

Since my last worsening six weeks ago I'm seriously contemplating whether I can continue doing it... It's been a massive part of my life though, it sucks super hard. I guess I have a few months more of COVID-19 to hope for an improvement, especially of my hyperacusis/noxacusis.

I'd say what I miss the most is future house/deep-house such as Tchami or just anything super bass heavy that needs to be listened to with a really nice pair of bass boosted headphones or a quality car sound system.

Also miss my Blink 182. My ears definitely can't handle stuff like Reckless Abandon anymore.

Trance was my favorite. Progressive, ethereal trance. I don't know music terms. Stuff that took me to another world.

It's low key enough that I could potentially listen to it again since it's not too wubby. But some parts have a lot of distortion and electronic noises, occasionally shrill chanting. So I don't know how I'd be able to handle that.

Everything sounds distorted and yucky to me like blah. I got my healthy eared friends that can listen to whatever they want and live like normal twenty something year olds but here's me rotting away. I miss playing music apps like Piano Tiles. I miss listening to Green Day and Maroon 5 and the Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry. I notice lot of things just sound like my tinnitus.

Does anybody else with bad reactive tinnitus think external noises sound more like tinnitus now?

So much music I miss... Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Low, Trail of Dead, Arab Strap, Sonic Youth, Black Sabbath, Minutemen, Coltrane, Swans, Unwound, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, fIREHOSE, Wilco, Sunn 0))), John Frusciante, Songs:Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co, Mojave 3, My Bloody Valentine, Autolux, Failure, A Silver Mt Zion, Oxbow, ISIS, Lightning Bolt, Glenn Branca, Neil Young, Derek Bailey, Shabazz Palace, Matana Roberts, Bill Dixon, Merzbow...

With that palette, is it really a surprise I'm on this forum lmao.

Noooo, I know that pain. I was more into early Songs:Ohia and the album of the same name than the band but it pains me I'll never get to hear Jason Molina in all his glory again.
That album is literally my all time favorite. I'm tearing up just typing that :(.

I listen to two songs every single morning hoping they will sound better and closer to normal one day:

"Landslide" and "Farewell Transmission."
I do the same with "Anthem for No State" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. If there is 0 dysacusis in that song, then it will be the same for all other music and I'll have a normal life again...

Some days it's less distorted than other days.

So I have a little hope for improvement.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you. For all of us, really.

I keep the door to my record room closed for now. I haven't sold off my collection even though I could use the money.

I can't.

Like you I have a little hope.

As Jason Molina said "Hope dies last of all..."

Man speaking of SUNN O))) I heard their concerts are unbearably loud and can cause ringing for days. A friend of mine who shoots guns regularly has been to a few of their shows.

Guess who has hearing damage and who doesn't? :/

Sunn O))) puts on an amazing show. They toured with Petra Haden and David Pajo last year if I recall correctly. I imagine without venue restrictions they probably reach upwards of 140 dB.

Well, I said fuck it and just resumed listening to Metal. It may not sound as crisp as it used to but I couldn't live without it. Helps get me thru physical labour more than any drug ever has! I've recovered enough that I can listen to Death/Black/Thrash/Grind with no issues, but oddly, "softer" genres, like anything with a high pitched soprano, will piss my ears right off! The old TTTS will kick into high gear. BUT, throw on some Motörhead and crank it to 11, and Lemmy's voice is somehow sweetness to my ears! Go figure.

Everything I used to listen to, lots of alt rock, indie rock, synth pop/rock, psychedelic rock, as well as some chill hop and vapor wave and lots and lots of 70s/80s music, just isn't the same with tinnitus that doesn't get masked easily.
I understand because tinnitus can definitely ruin music when intrusive enough. I'm jealous of mild tinnitus people or no tinnitus people. No tinnitus people can definitely hear music in all its splendor and glory if they aren't like deaf or anything.

I do listen to music again now. If I don't continuously listen to it, it's still quite enjoyable. Nowhere near the same feeling but better than nothing.

New member here.

Everyone, I am a hardcore audio enthusiast, for many years, with professional equipment.
And software knowledge.

I suffer with hyperacusis.

I am able to smooth, soothe and reduce fast and punchy transient response in songs that are bothersome for people with hyperacusis.

Track by track I use a compilation of specific filters that smooth these responses down, without loss of detail retrieval, resolution or clarity. This isn't basic EQ, turn down the highs or mids.

This works across the whole spectrum to still keep the transients present but not as punchy and forward sounding.

I listen to electronic music in general which is usually badly made with horrible mastering techniques.

Your headphones or speakers also matter as their own frequency response plays a role. But I can tone it done for people that can still listen to music between 40 dB and 50 dB.

I enjoy music between 50 dB and 60 dB with this specified editing.

Without it, I would be blown out in 2 tracks at 60 dB.

If yiu are interested reach out. I'd love to help out and edit a track or 2.
No cost of course.

Yes I am listening to John Frusciante right now! I listen to his music almost daily. He's one of the musicians that has got me through the crappiest year of my life. His music is therapy.

I can't listen to anything with horns without my hyperacusis taking some offense these days.

I'm empathetic for those who have no hope of ever enjoying music again. I thought that this would be the case, for me, but for the past year, I've had a great deal of music in my life, mostly thanks to the wide availability of sources from the computer that can be accessed and played through the audio system. I've purchased new audio equipment for my system, and listen to a range of musical forms.

For those of us who are ready to return to music listening, it can be a major source of joy and entertainment, and very therapeutic as well.

To those who cannot, I hope that you can do so in the future.
