For about eight weeks now, I have been experiencing a white noise-like external sound when I watch TV on volume levels 1 to 3. It feels like background noise that overpowers people talking, so I have to increase the volume a bit to hear clearly. A lot of people say audio quality is bad for them. Is this what they mean? If I increase the volume slightly, it seems to improve.

I have hyperacusis and reactive tinnitus, and this issue seems to fluctuate for me. Nothing else fluctuates with my hyperacusis. It is consistently bad. I am housebound.

Has anyone found that this type of issue goes away over time? I have not seen anyone mention it before.

Lastly, I have a Samsung Smart TV. Is there any way to equalize the volume so it does not spike when people shout or during ads?

Thank you!

This is common with reactive tinnitus. I am personally very familiar with it. Certain frequencies can make the tinnitus "wind up" or react, overpowering background noise, as you mentioned. This might happen with TV noise, running sinks in the distance, vacuum cleaners, or similar sounds.

One thing you can try is adjusting the treble on your TV. I use a SONOS soundbar connected to my TV, which provides pretty good sound quality.

It will likely improve with time. Whether it will go away completely is hard to say, as there are no definite answers with tinnitus.
