- Cause of Tinnitus
- Loud music, cold water?
I wish I could say when I first noticed my tinnitus or even what caused it. All I know is that I've had it for over 30 years, possibly from loud music or a short stint of cold water surfing in a New England winter.
Lately, it seems to have gotten louder, or maybe I'm just focusing on it more. I knew I had ringing in my ears years ago, but when my most common responses became "What?" and "Huh?" I figured I could live with the mild ringing. It was like the sound of spring peepers or late summer crickets.
Over time, I started having more trouble understanding people in crowded environments. My wife came with me to an audiologist appointment, and I ended up with a pair of $6000 hearing aids. I wear them occasionally, but if I'm alone watching TV, I don't turn the volume up too loud. I also don't hear questions from other rooms, around corners, or behind closed doors too well, but who does?
I recently watched an infomercial about a so-called breakthrough, a combination of all natural herbs supposedly capable of curing tinnitus in as little as seven days, though a three month supply was recommended for best results. I'll never get that 20 minutes back.
Out of curiosity, I tried Reddit and came across the name Julian Cowan Hill. What I heard from him was far more interesting and positive than the typical snake oil sales pitch. He also suggested joining a forum to learn from others' experiences and get a better understanding of what I'm going through.
I would love to find some direction, whether that means lessening the sounds, eliminating them, or simply learning how to deal with them more effectively. I'm looking forward to hearing others' success stories and, hopefully, finding some relief.
I'm 63 now, and it took me this long to really start searching for a solution.
