As so many seem to be ototoxic. I think I may have one, I'll go to the doctor tomorrow but want to make sure I get the right ones.

Thanks!

Normally you don't need treatments for ear infections as they will clear up. But if it doesn't then consider antibiotics.

Hi everyone,

I have to get antibiotics for an infection but I'm scared of taking meds in general and unsure wether there are any 'tinnitus-friendly' options. What are your recommendations and experiences?

Thanks in advance for any feedback

Try to avoid aminoglycosides, usually the "mycins". They are proven to be ototoxic.

And if it's possible and your infection is not life threatening, avoid clindamycin. That's the worst offender antibiotic causing Cdiff infection, which is truly horrible, and resistent to most of the antibiotics, but treated with vancomycin, which can also be ototoxic.

AS above, the mycins are the worry...
Most people have no issues with regulars like amoxicillin...
The risk of the infection getting worse vs the risk of tinnitus POSSIBLY spiking...
Gotta weigh it up.

@Lynny
Below you will find a comprehensive list with ototoxic medications that can cause tinnitus.

Scroll down to the header 'antibiotics' on page 614 (the document starts on page 600), and there you can find all the antibiotics that are safe (or not safe) for you to use. Page 610 describes what the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4, represent. If I recall correctly, numbers 1 and 2 are meds associated with generating tinnitus. I do, however, strongly advise you to read more than just those pages, as there's more information on ototoxicity in the rest of the document as well.

You could enquire about the antibiotics the doc can offer you, and use the search function in the document to find it.
