Why Does My Tinnitus Stay Quiet for Up to 2 Weeks, Then Starts Again? And the Cycle Repeats Itself

Tinnitus Since

Cause of Tinnitus
plugged nasal eustachian tube
My tinnitus will stay quiet for up to 2 weeks, then for some unknown reason it starts up again rather faint, and for 2 days it remains spiked and then it eventually goes quiet again.

Just when I think it's gone it says I'm back.

Anyone have a thought?

Thanks,

Wow 2 weeks of relief sounds good. Mine can go quieter up to maybe 4-5 days tops. Sometimes it's one day quiet and the next intrusive and just yo-yo like that. I feel that it's sleep cycle related for me ie waking up in the wrong sleep stage or not getting enough of a certain stage.

I have to agree with the sleep cycle. Some mornings my head feels like it has electric shocks running through it and all stuffy

Members on this forum have a common habit of trying to compare to others cases of tinnitus when there are usually a lot of differences.

Different cases of tinnitus are not always relatable to one another, the hypothetical neuro-gateway mechanisms behind tinnitus switching on and off are not understood, there are probably sub-types of tinnitus that aren't even classified and the community is in the dark speculating.

I have stopped trying to fathom why my tinnitus fluctuates so much after my second noise trauma in 2008 and now accept it. It ranges from complete silence, mild, moderate severe and can reach very severe levels. Yesterday it was so quiet I could hear a pin drop and today, it's very intrusive but I'm able to manage for now. If the intensity were to increase over the next day or two, I might have to take clonazepam which calms it down, and haven't taken it in quite a while.

How do you feel when the clonazepam wears off? Your tinnitus is louder afterwards or do you feel any anxiety?

Thankfully, I haven't had any problems with clonazepam since I was prescribed it in 2010. My ENT consultant advised me to only take it when the tinnitus is severe. Over the years I have gradually depended on it less. If I now have to take it, then it's for a maximum of 2 to 3 days. The dose is: 2x 0.5mg tablets per day. I have no after effects. However, for the period I'm taking it I can feel a lethargic but this is quite acceptable as the tinnitus usually reduces to complete silence.

After taking clonazepam the tinnitus returns to normal. Either compete silence, mild or moderate and I have no problems with this.

That's great, clonazepam has the same effect on me but I always feel a bit wired the day afterwards. It's just good to know to have something when things get worse.

I think it's a good sign you have these fluctuations, hopefully the good weeks become months.

Mine changes throughout the day. Like before I could hear a loud ssssssshhhhhhhhh then consciously it went eeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Sometimes I think somebody is hoovering next door, but it's in my head, and that sound always disappears.

I could be wrong. But I think people who originally developed Tinnitus from a medication or substance are more likely to have fluctuations that can take the volume down to very low or non-existent vs. people who have noise induced Tinnitus.

Noise induced T was caused by actual damage to the ear causing hearing loss that is permanent. Mine is noise induced and the volume fluctuates from always there, but at best is a constant annoyance, to very loud. And the days that it is very loud I often think I know the reason, such as alcohol the night before, stress, or maybe a surprise noise that went unprotected.

And mine is just loud enough on the good days to still give me headaches. I have headaches daily due to it. And the headaches sometimes exacerbate the T. It's a terrible cycle.

Medications or substances that cause it are an effect on the brain. I would think this is somewhat reversible.

I'm not quoting any source. That is just my thought.

I hope you feel better, get plenty of rest and try not to think about it too much. My T has been worrying me lately
