Hi, not sure what is going on.
One minute fine next minute a growing ringing in my ear..
At first it was both ears then only my left ear.
I don't have to describe it as a lot of you on here will know.
I don't particularly have music loud at home, use in ear phones at the gym.

I went to the doctors and they checked inside ear, no infection and no build up of anything. No discharge etc. The doctors said 47 days to see someone in hospital! I just said no way! This could be life changing!
47 days for a 5 minute appointment! That is a joke. She said she can not 'fast track' me because I am not having headaches, well I am going right back on Monday to say I am having the worst headaches!

I am healthy, don't smoke, drink alcohol (though I used to drink) and keep active.

What could be going on?
It's just a constant flat tone... weirdly if music is on, it sort of picks up the higher frequencies and makes them sort of echo, not all the time but some times.....

I do feel discomfort around my head, like shooting pains.. 47 DAYS! What is going on!? Is that a joke or what?!?!

Should I listen to music in the mean time? I can not have this in my ear.

Can anyone give me any info? Because that doctor knew nothing.

Difficult to say. But... in-ear phones can be culprits. The danger with such devices (where there is background noise) is that the volume needs to be increased to compensate for that. And then... you get all the trouble with hearing loss and tinnitus (after a period of time).

That is a joke.
That may be a joke. But here is the real "joke": even if you get a fast appointment, there is probably little that can be done (an etiology for tinnitus is often difficult to obtain - and - even more difficult to treat/cure).

P.S. Avoid loud noise from now on (just to be safe). Use ear-plugs (also for everyday situations where there is heavy traffic, commuting, and so on...).

The hidden mechanisms in your ears can easily be damaged over time through the use of headphones. Not to mention, gyms are usually filled with very loud noises including music and weights creating a loud sound. This adds on to the sound waves that are already very close to your cochlea/auditory nerve. Damage is inevitable.

What was your mental-health status before this started? Overly anxious? Depressed? Stressed?

Not too sure. I'm not in the happiest of places, lot's of pressures on, trying to hard to make things happen, working on a new business idea, not seeing friends as much due to trying to hard with things. But generally I'm a positive person, but I think I have mood swings that come and go, one min I'm up bouncing, and I can be easily brought down.

So people actually live all their lives with this ringing? That's just torture. Not sure I could handle this!

Avoid loud music? So no more parties or anything?
I don't even party that much in loud places, don't even drink now.
So you say avoid loud music forever, if this is not going away avoid loud music forever?

I am not here to tell how people should live their lives. I am offering an opinion. Nothing more.

You may be eligible for the AM-101 study (http://tinnitus-study.info)

Good luck.

Thanks, not sure i have time to be taking part in studies.

But I read this on the site..

'If so, you should seek specialist medical advice without delay. While your tinnitus may be temporary, the condition can also become permanent.'

So this could be temporary, and the doctor said 47 days!? I said I want it seeing as soon as possible, not 47 days! What if there's a chance to see something or a cause?

It's not a study. It is the first drug ever devised to treat acute inner ear tinnitus (for certain conditions).

You may not "have the time" to enroll with the study. And that's fine. Just know that your (current) tinnitus could stay with you for life (if you don't do something about it and/or change your life-habits).

I am leaving this thread.

Good luck.

I'm trying to do something about it. Hence why i signed up here. To get info. But not sure I can commit to studies or in this case not sure about trying new drugs.

@needtostop Were you exposed to any loud sounds before the onset of your tinnitus? Are you noticing any other symptoms than ringing in the ears? And last but not least, have you been taking vitamin D lately or any other supplements for that sake?

Hi, not particularly loud sounds no, to be honest I've not been to a club for a long time, at home I don't have a TV, I have music on but not loud at all, and a lot of time I sit in silence. Other symptoms include some shooting pains across the head, not painful just sort of awkward, sometimes a second tone will come on over the lower tone. And not that I know of no? I used to take zinc and some multi hits but stopped. Eat a healthy mixed diet, lots of greens, veg, fruits, no meats, cut dairy out 6 months ago also. ?? Vit D?

Some people simply develop tinnitus one day without an actual event. So weird! I recently talked to a guy who just woke up with it one day out of nowhere. Yours seems to not be connected to anything specific IMHO
I really hope it goes away for you, you're in an actute state so it totally could just stop or fade away. But no worries if it stays you'll most likely get used to it. Most people with T live pretty normal lives ... Especially those who are lucky enough to not have super loud T

Have you taken an hearing test? Did it show any loss?

There is a reason behind your tinnitus. You don't just get it out of nowhere. Try to rememeber what you did before the ringing occured.

Is your tinnitus somatic? Like, can you manipulate your tinnitus with jaw/facial movement? Place the open palm of your hand flat against your forehead and push your forehead against it, are you noticing any increase or changes in your tinnitus?

Forehead pushed against palm, no real difference.
Can not think what I did before it happened?
Like I said, my last gym session was 4 days before it happened, using in ear phones, even then I was only running and don't blast music.. Can't really think of anything. Someone mentioned their reason was a fan at night, if that can bring it on then it could be anything. ?

What about vit d? Does that help with it or cause it?

You need to see a doctor faster and also an audiologist. You can also sign up to the AM-101.

These are the only things you should be doing before thinking about alternative treatments and trying to find the cause yourself.

Well, I'm not a doctor but high amounts of vitamin D can lead to high calcium and magnesium deficiency, resulting in tinnitus. This could simply go away by taking magnesium and b12 supplements.

But if you're not having other symptoms, and your ears and hearing is ok, it's not much a doctor can do besides tell you to wait for it to go away. Most tinnitus cases resolves on it's own the first 6 months.

Where can I see an audiologist? And I will look at that test.

OK 2 questions.
Can the ear repair itself (the hairs?)
Should I go to get a hearing test? Can they do anything?
Anything I can be doing to help it heal itself? Use some kind of ear plugs? Avoid raves? What is the % of healing?

It depends on the cause. Hair cells in the inner can not be regenerated, but the body is able to heal the damaged nerves causing the tinnitus.

I'm suprised your ENT didn't take a hearing test the first time you were there, 90 % of tinnitus cases is because of hearing loss. Noise damage is often very cumulative, and damage occurs long before actual hearing loss is perceived. I would suggest you to wear ear plugs when you're outside, and stop using earphones completely. Keep everything in low volum as much as possible the first 3 months.

Good luck

So the docs I went to today is classed as an ENT? She just stuck a tool in my ear, looked and said all looks ok... Like I said I was not convinced that it was a thorough check?
So there is a good chance that it will heal itself?
So while at the gym deffo no ear phones? Damn, it's hard to run to the crap they play there.
Any special ear buds? Cause I would imagine those cheap yellow ones will not do me any good? Can I not damage it more by using cheap ear buds? Will cleaning ear buds have caused it? I use them occasionally. But not all the time, though the doctor said she could see nothing in the ear. I'm just not convinced about that visit! What if she wants to just get me in the NHS system.

Is it possible that you did yourself an injury at the gym? Sometimes this can either cause or exacerbate tinnitus of a temporary or different nature. Resolving an injury to the neck, spine or shoulders can sometimes help.

Music wise, you can certainly listen but headphones are possibly a bad idea because their very presence will affect air pressure within the ear. Listen to music but keep it low enough that you can just hear the tinnitus like sounds over the top. That way, if you do have tinnitus, the presence of a fraction of the sound will begin the process of habituation.
