That is my experience too. I am using noise cancelling headphones in a van. I then turn up the radio and the higher frequencies are getting through better than lower frequencies. The lower frequencies of road and engine noise are down to a luxurious level.

Perhaps something else will happen. I read that most prone to damage are outer hair-cells. Outer hair cells "regulate" dynamics of the sound as I understand. Perhaps therefore regenerating that damaged part will give back the dynamics?

Don't underestimate distorted hearing. I have both distorted hearing and tinnitus. My tinnitus is pretty tiresome, but I hate the distorted hearing even more. What does not help at all is that I used to appreciate good quality sound systems.

I read that a hair cell needs these synapses in order to survive. Likely it will survive with a smaller amount of synapses, otherwise there would not be the so called "hidden hearing loss". Also I wonder if damaged hair cells survive or will eventually die anyway.

I still don't understand exactly. After all, my generation and generation before had Discman. I remember many years ago people with head phones and in-ear phones in all the time. The warnings about playing sound to loud for extended time with headphones are 10-20 ore even more years old.

What I wondered about is the number of progenitor cells in the outer hair cell region. In images I see, where these progenitor cells are shown, there are way less progenitor cells close to outer hair-cell regions.

Yes evolution apparently did not work to our advantage in the inner ear. Perhaps one day science is able to explain the reason why mammals lost the ability to regenerate hair cells.
