Short answer is nobody knows for sure. In my personal experience, I never had fleeting T until I had actual T. However others have had fleeting T before getting actual T.

I don't know, maybe I was just one of the lucky few, but I used earplugs a lot, even during the night and I heard silence. Aside from the intermittent low hum and fleeting tinnitus, I never heard hissing or pure tones, not even after concerts, never.

In case anyone finds this thread later, +1 data point: I just had an episode of low hum fleeting T, for the first time ever (my fleeting T has always been high tones). It resolved without issue, but it did scare the bejeezus out of me.

I get the same thing and it was a benign cause (Eustachian tube issues and TMJ). Could very well be the same for you, if that helps your paranoia. When it's that fleeting, I think it's usually benign.

People with T get fleeting T more often than healthy people. It seems to me that fleeting T might be our body's attempt to re-calibrate and to get rid of T.
