Cause of Tinnitus
loud noise exposure over the years
Hello all,

My tinnitus is fairly new to me, and I've been having trouble on learning how to cope with it. But reading everyone's post on this forum has given me so much hope, and helps me forget the noise to some extent when reading. Always comes back.

I just got my tinnitus over winter break, I'm in my second year of college, and I really don't know what to do. I feel as if everyone around me doesn't understand what I'm going through. I don't know how I'm going to react to my tinnitus when I go back to school, and I'll be further away from home. I hate to say this, but I'm so scared and I don't know what I need to be in preparation for. I need help and support.

Talk with your head of year and they can put in place extra support ,counselling, nurse and even you could ask to be put i touch with others whom have tinnitus.
Love glynis

Hi there,

it's ok to be nervous with tinnitus. All of us were in your shoes and can relate to your emotions 100%. It will take some time to adjust to tinnitus. My formula for tinnitus is:

Time + Support + Relaxation/distraction

Time = You will need time to adjust, each day can make us stronger

Support = you need support and love. Talk it out with people, that you trust

Relax = you need to do stuff and take your mind away from the noise

Hang in there, you will be ok.

Welcome to the forum @Joseph. It is quite common for college age young people to develop tinnitus. Yes initially they got anxious like you but many have since gotten better and some even went on to medical school or grad school. So don't panic and don't worry too much. Take one day at a time. Things will improve. Have you been able to sleep enough daily? If you need it, some natural herbal products such as chamomile, lemon balm, hops, valerian can help calm the anxiety and Melatonin can help with sleep.

Thank you for the support! Every bit helps. But recently my ENT specialist put me on a dose of prednisone after some ear wax removal in my ears. I've been able to sleep pretty well it's just that I seem more tired than usual. And my T keeps me from taking naps during the day now. :(
