Hey, so I have mild tinnitus and I was wondering if it will stay at the same level or if it will become a high pitch noise...

I'm only a teen and on a scale from 1 to 10 my tinnitus is a 4-3.

I can sleep without masking it and I usually don't notice it during the day...

I was just wondering if things will change cause I'm really scared about the future.

By the way, random thought, how long does healing from acoustic trauma takes and if you heal from it will tinnitus go away ?!

As with vision, your hearing progressively gets worse as you age. You will love your high frequency cilia first since they are the first hair cells sound waves make contact with in your cochlea. Hair cells usually die from stress, either acute stress or long terms wear and tear. If you stress your lower frequency cilia they will die faster. So be careful when using headphones and to not expose them to high decibels for prolonged periods.

SO to answer your question, yes, it can get worse. When I first noticed mine is months ago it barely bothered me. Then I had a severe sinus infection and it got worse. You can view my other posts to see the end result of that, though in my case I have a desire to get the last laugh on my brain, thus the seemingly psychotic level anger and desire to damage my brain. So long as your protect your ears from prolonged sound exposure, avoid high doses of ototoxic drugs, and treat sinus infections right away you have a good shot at preventing it from becoming worse. Also, try and avoid stress. I cannot avoid it and, well, you see the end result.

@Komodo Since your tinnitus was caused by loud noise and not an underlying medical condition you are in a good place. By this, I mean as long you are keep away from overly loud sounds and I advise that you never use headphones even at low volume, your tinnitus should not get worse. If you start to use sound enrichment at night, I don't mean masking. It is quite possible for your tinnitus to reduce more. Place a sound machine by your bedside and set the volume slightly below your tinnitus, and play this until morning. By sleeping in a quiet room you are not helping yourself

I have written an article:Tinnitus, A Personal View that you might find helpful. Click on my started threads and it is in the list.

You need to protect your ears now and no more headphones/earbuds. It depends as T is unpredictable.

I'm a teenager myself though I have severe tinnitus that didn't really progress from mild or anything.

Like the others said, your tinnitus can get worse but it's unlikely if you protect your ears. Unfortunately some people do experience a rise in volume at some point but not everybody does. It could be caused by anything from having a cold, an ear infection, or somebody popping a balloon next to your ear; though most of these situations cause spikes, not permanent damage.

The annoying thing is that we can't control every situation so we (or others) are always at risk of making it worse; so do what you can to protect your ears when you can control the situation you're in, and you should be fine.

Mine hasn't gotten worse yet, in fact more tolerable in the recent months. It has its days and weeks though.

Best of luck~

Protecting your ears and reducing stress/anxiety are crucial. Tinnitus can happen, for a variety of reasons, those 2 elements besides Illness/medicine can increase your tinnitus.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!! You need to make sure you do everything you can to protect your ears. Do not do the same stupid things as me. These things included:

1: ) not walking away from more potential damaging noise and thinking. Ahh, it will be fine and I will just brunt it (BAD mistake).
2: ) sonic cleaning at the dentist - just don't!
3: ) ototoxic medications that should have not gave a reaction (small percentage it would, but unluckiest person in the world here so of course it did). This happened time and time again so truly do your research first.
4: ) music, concerts and headphones. I don't know how old you are. But you have a VERY long life in front of you. A few hours of pleasure is not worth another 60 - 80 years of pure torture if this causes it to increase from mild to bad. I can't even travel or hardly do long distances in a car. Just wrap your head around that.
5: ) flying - just wear some good headphones when you do this. It's just not worth it!

I've had tinnitus for over 14 years and it keeps getting worse if exposed to very loud environments. Don't ever think it can't get any louder because it can. It's that simple it can get worse if you don't protect your ears.

@Sambiz

So very true. One has to be careful of loud environments. Using headphones even at low volume can make tinnitus worse for some people with Noise induced tinnitus.

I believe that I had mild tinnitus that I could only hear in a dead quiet room. Unfortunately, due to a series of events (some of my own doing), that mild tinnitus cranked up to severe just over 2 years ago. It has since improved greatly, but is still bothersome. Be very careful my friend.
