Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is listed as ototoxic but I read online it doesn't worsen tinnitus?

Has anyone taken it and they have been okay? I'd like to know, please and thank you.

Most certainly not. Always check your sources of who is telling you its ototoxic. I have taken it for years since my Tinnitus; it maybe even makes it more quiet!

Panadol is very gentle.

I take Tylenol/acetaminophen all the time (allergic to NSAIDs) and have done so for many years. Doesn't affect my tinnitus one way or the other.

The following is from THIS LINK: -- Does Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Cause Tinnitus?

"Through various trials and studies, the active ingredient acetaminophen has been found to cause or worsen tinnitus in a very small percentage of those who take drugs that contain it."

The following is from this article: -- Non-Ototoxic Over-the-Counter Pain Relief

"Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in normal doses for short periods (i.e. a couple of weeks or less) shouldn't give you any problems. But recent research has shown that taking Acetaminophen regularly (say a couple of times a week for a year) increases your risk of hearing loss 99%. Thus if you only take it occasionally or for short periods at normal doses, it shouldn't bother your ears much if at all. Note, taking Acetaminophen in very high doses for 2 or more months can cause massive hearing loss—hearing loss so bad you will need a cochlear implant, if it doesn't kill your liver first.

I don't like that site.
Acetaminophen is not a NSAID and therefore is safe to take.
Says it depletes glutathione, so just take nac. Can't vouch for its accuracy. Acetaminophen is also listed in ototoxic drug lists, but then again so is fricking everything. I think if you eat it daily like candy, it might be an issue. Here and there should be ok, otherwise there'd be lots of bad press like there is about NSAIDs.

I wish there was a sticky or something on TT about that site. The author has no medical or pharmaceutical qualifications. Infact they are in forestry! Why he writes about audiology matters is beyond me!

It's beyond me how the author was able to get the ATA to use the list on their site. Some of the drugs only had a few cases reported in the last ten years.

Yep, and they are antidotal internet reports which are impossible to verify.

I assume you meant "anecdotal" :)
The other part of these blacklists is that they rarely describe the amounts needed to become ototoxic. All drugs have side effects and some kind of toxicity somewhere (liver, etc).
I personally don't worry about taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen, as long as it's sporadic and within the recommended dosage.

I have taken advil/tylenol twice a month for many years now and never had issues.

I do still take NSAIDs sometimes. Acetaminophen is my first choice but it's not as great without that anti-inflammatory in there.
