Tinnitus Since
10/ 2016 (T free since mid March 2017)
Cause of Tinnitus
ETD (most probably)
Last Friday evening we had an old classmate gathering at a restaurant. We had not met for 30+ years. Everyone was very excited and a lot of noise was there as people were singing Karaoke. Just before starting the Karaoke contest, I saw one of my old mates sitting right in front of me putting on ear plugs. During a small break, out of curiocity I asked her why she put on the ear plugs. She told me that she had tinnitus about 5 years ago. I asked if she has it at the moment. She said it disappeared long time ago. I got very excited to hear her story.I told her I also had tinnitus for about 6 months, and we talked a lot, Here is her story in short.

She got tinnitus from an accidental firecrackers at a wedding party. The firecrackers were set off 2 meters from her. After 3 days of ear fullness her ears started to ring. At first it was a high pitched noise followed by crickets later. Like most members here, she was in hell for the first 2 months. Her ENT had prescribed someting for sleeping which she couldn't remenber. She had worn protection where there was loud sound present. She told me that after 9 months, the cricket sound disappeard leaving only a very low TV static noise. She had had spikes once in awhile lasted 2~3 days but not severe enough to bother her with daily activities. At one year anniversary mark, she had fully habituated to the sound and wasn't paying ateention to it at all. In the end, after 15 months of suffering, in the middle of one winter night in 2011, she had found out that the noise was completely gone.

Hope this brings some relife and hope to others here.

yes! T seems to clean after 7-9 months after incident, not for H but H is more slow, maybe 10 months!... happy to read about this.

Are you saying that T of someone you know cleared up after 9 months?

My H ended after about 6 months. I still have T, but I did manage to get two new acoustic traumas during months 3 and 9, so perhaps that explains it.

yes, mine, my T is from an alto sax on mi ears on a little room since april 2017, now cleaned, but my H is ultra low, sometimes I felt the sensation coming back with some sounds but in a minimal way, I came back to play with my band, but my cause of H (due to a malfunction of the eustachian tubes) is for my nose septum deviation,... i need a functional surgery!...

Thank you for sharing your success story.
I came back to play with my band
I believe you can promote your H healing and ensure that T doesn't come back by stopping playing with the band (or at least doing it temporarily, to let your body heal).

thanks @Rick Garner

I'm hoping mine clears within 6 months too! I'm 3 months in, mine is most likely caused by TMJ issues (jaw is misaligned and setting off my ear nerves). I've been getting TMJ treatment for the past 2.5 months now so I'm praying this is all over soon!

In your original post you had mentioned you went on flights during those six months, that really helped me to hear as I was paranoid it would slow the healing process. But I've flown to Hawaii, Chicago, and going to Boston later. Haven't had any changes to that makes me happy!

Hi alleycat,

If you don't have accumulated hearing loss or long term abuse of ears by exposing to loud sound, and your tinnitus is due to other issues such as TMJ, ETD, neck etc., There is a pretty high chance of clearing up once the underlying issues are treated. Even after the right treatment, It will take time, a lot of time for something to happen. Have positive hopes. I had ETD, and I got rid of it,and so did my tinnitus.

Yep, I flew to LAX which took 13 hours from where I live. If your tinnitus is non-reactive, you will be fine. Hope yours will clear up soon.

Hai Rick,
I got tinnitus from an ear injury caused by sharp tool, but my tympanic membrane was intact. Still I got 'T' . Have you met anyone of these kind who got relief from their T?

Hi ajith,
I am sorry to hear your suffering. Unfortunately, I haven't met anyone with similar condition like yours. Be positive. You might get away from your tinnitus as time goes by.

My colleague recently went for an ear operation to repair his eardrum and he doesn't have T. Even after the operation there's no T. His ear is also partly deaf but no T. He told me his eardrum got damaged from an infection which was not treated. My advice is stay positive nomatter what. Anything is possible and i don't think any of us here know whats going to happen to you but anything is possible and i believe your T may still vanish. Take care!

I saw a member here named Stephanie LC who got T after perforating her eardrum accidentally from a toy. She was an active member here from january 2017 to june 2017,and was on another forum until july 2017. After that , she suddenly vanished.

You can try writing a private message to her asking for an update on her current condition. She will then get a notification e-mail from this forum, and might then reply to you. Some people don't allow private messages to be sent to them. In that case, just know that the fact that she had disappeared is probably a good sign (her condition had probably improved).

Yep! I do messaged her,but no reply. I think she has moved on with her life which is definitely a great news.

@alleycat Hi there - may I ask what is the characteristic of your T? I have some TMJ issues as well, but mine is low in volume but totally erratic - 1 second hisses / static noise.

If your T was from noise trauma, there is nothing magical about 3,6, 9 months. If your T is fading, don't put a time limit on it. I have read many stories of T taking 1-2 years, even 3 years to fully fade. T takes what it takes to fade.

@Stasiapascual Yeah I still do, my jaw still hurts almost on a daily basis, so I know the problem that is causing my T is not fixed yet unfortunately. My ear ringing is usually more noticeable at the end of the day, i think because of eating during the day and having to talk a lot.

@Rick Garner I am new to T about 10 days of constant high pitched ringing (sounds like a train stopping) in my HEAD, but it also seems reactive loud sounds vibrate my head and seem to spike it even higher, I haven't been exposed to any loud sounds but I've been exposed to medicine, viral meningitis, ct scans/mri, spinal tap, my T started right after I stopped amoxicillin/Ibuprofen because I was told I had a sinus infection (which an ENT said I don't when I went for the T last week) he thinks my eustacian tubes are inflammed so he gave me prednisone which I started yesterday, but you scared me when you said if it's not reactive you're fine bcus mine seems. To be

Hi Dginobile,

First of all, I am sorry for your suffering. I didn't quite understand the last phrase of your post. Can you elaborate on that? Thank you.

According to her, at one point you said that as long as T is not reactive, one ought to be fine. This seems to imply that if T Is reactive, one might not be fine. Her T is reactive...

Dginobile, what I meant by the the word "fine" was that as long as someone's tinnitus is non-reactive to loud sound, it is basically okay for that individual to take a flight, goes to the cinema or be in a loud restaurant etc. without proper protection. The tinnitus that I had was ETD related, not noise induced hence did not react to anything like food, beverages and loud sound etc.. Anyway, remember to wear proper protection in loud environments, if yours is reactive type. Hang in there, it will take a long time to see any improvement.
