Hi Dr. Nagler,

Please can you tell me if there are any potential detrimental effects to my tinnitus and hyperacusis from the magnetism generated from an MRI?

I understand that the level of noise can reach 120 dB.

I need this procedure to assess my neurological symptoms. I don't really relish the resounding spike that will occur to my reactive tinnitus and hyperacusis.

I'm feeling very apprehensive.
Thank you so much.

Su.

To the best of my knowledge, Su, the magnetism generated from an MRI has no potential detrimental effects to either tinnitus or hyperacusis.

Right, the noise level is another matter entirely. And that can indeed be a concern, which is why it is very important to wear properly inserted earplugs throughout the study. I suggest practicing with the earplugs ahead of time so you will not be fumbling with them on the day of the MRI. If they give you headphones, use earplugs under the headphones.

I'm feeling very apprehensive.
Hope this helps!
