Associated Symptoms

Hi Folk's
Along with the cursed ringing I have quite a bit of pressure and shooting pains in my ears most of the time, dizziness quite a bit also. Do many of you other tinnitus sufferers have other symptoms/issues associated with your tinnitus? It seems like the pressure in my ears is getting worse and staying longer as time goes on. I wonder where the ceiling is on these afflictions. How much worse can they get? I worry about them more now and it makes matters worse. It becomes a vicious circle/cycle. I don't want to worry others out there if they read this and are experiencing similar events. Know that you're not alone........... Rich

Hi Richard

First of all I just want to say that its wise to have information like the onset and cause of your tinnitus. This is for your own benefit and makes it easier to give a proper answer, because the more you know, the more you can rule out. I know I dont have the cause of mine in my profile, but thats simply because I have no idea what caused it. Maybe I should label it as unknown.

That being said, pressure difference in the inner ear compared to the outside pressure can be caused by many things, meniers desiase being one of them. But a way more common cause is blocking of the eustachian tube. This is a tube that goes from the back of your throat and up to the inner ear. When it gets blocked the air gets trapped between the blockage of the eustacian tube and the ear drum. Since the air has nowhere to go, the pressure in your inner ear will stop communicating with the outside pressure, and hence the pressure difference. Getting rid of the pressure difference may also make you get rid of the tinnitus since tinnitus can be caused by such pressure difference. From what Ive heard there has been developed some tecniques to open the up the tube (some sort of baloon tecnique? saw it on youtube). An alternative would be to make a hole in the ear drum, so the air can escape that way, but this is sort of a last resort from what Ive heard. I guess it could be quite painfull. Breathing steam also helps opening up the tube. Another member here called @engineerLA has made a thread about this problem with some guidelines you can follow to sort it out. He got rid of his tinnitus by doing so. Here is a link to his thread:

Hi Jesse, thanks for your response. I'm kind of in the unknown bracket. Last year I saw a couple general docs, and 2 ENT's and a Neurologist. Had blood work done, MRI, etc. According to them, nothing looked abnormal. Something had got to be out of whack obviously to be struggling so bad with these afflictions. If the Good Lord ever entrusts me with a real treatment or a cure for this stuff , it would be an honor and blessing to share it with all you folk's, free of charge! Thanks again for responding...... Rich

I have been wondering about the same thing. Since the onset of my T over 2 years ago there is an entire new set of symptoms I am experiencing like: neck, shoulder and back pains, fatigue and tiredness, a feeling of dizziness and sometimes a pulsatile Tinnitus on top of the high constrant screetching in my head. These additional symptoms come and go and vary in intensity. In general I have to say that since the onset of my T I have not felt healthy and 100% ever again. I am 32 but sometimes feel as if I was already at my late 60s... my body is giving up on me.

Lower back pain, general weakness, tiredness, periods of headaches, apathy etc. I am tired when I get out of bed, my job is quite physical but I feel wrecked these days. Tinnitus has certainly worn me down.

I feel like a complete zombie, totally out of it. I had a qEEG done and have traumatic brain injury, the doctor said he is surprised I can read and comprehend a single sentence. This has all been brought on by T and H somehow, it's not just a noise like many think. I look 5-10 years older in 18 months. A side by side picture of me right before T and now is actually horrifying for me to look at. Yeah, this noise/pain in my brain/ears has had a trickle down effect, that is for sure.

Yes and that is why I created a facebook group.. Support for Chronic H and T and associated conditions.

I have alot going on..plus continued worsening :(

@Telis that doesn't surprise me, interesting though. .How do you sleep? if poorly, maybe that is why?

I know this sounds bad, kind of embarrassing actually. I sleep in shifts so I don't have to endure a entire 16 hour or so day of this pain :(. I know this can't be good for the system but it gets me through. I always know I'm just a few hours away from sleep/relief. I sometimes can't believe I live like this.

The doctors seemed puzzled that I had so much damage after my scan. They told me I suffered PTSD from the onset of T, I don't know, I really don't know about any of this. What I do know is that my cognitive ability is a small fraction of what it once was. I might actually post the scan here, maybe someone knows how to read it.

@Telis
Well my cognitive skills are way down as well. I keep thinking I have developed Fibro or CFS as result from the constant stress. My memory is shite. Like seriously bad! I forgot my own age the other day. .Had to ask my kid. I really couldn't remember if I was __or__ lol but yea I have to put everything in my planner or it doesnt exist. Could be my benzo though!

My Neurodentist thinks I have Fibro, but I don't know..I doubt it..I think its all just stress..maybe PTSD too. I no doubt developed it at onset.

I just heard that two universities out West did a study and concluded that mindfulness worked the best for PTSD...of course being in a mindfulness course right now, I know how hard it is to practice consistently with screeching T.

I think telis you do what you got to do, to keep going..it seems that because I have been extremely active in the last few months I am worse. .When I stayed in all the time and rarely spoke to anyone but my immediate family I felt better.

I use sleeps as a means to escape as well sometimes..but I am also depressed...

Hi Richard, have you ever had any hearing loss. I have the exact same symptoms as you...started with loud T, ear pressure, then dizziness added to the mix on / off for 8 weeks, but I have no hearing loss so they don't think menieres. But yesterday the lady who retested my hearing said it does sound like menieres :-(

Yes I have loads of other things with the onset of T. I've a few choices for getting it metal poisoning and brain/ Head injury due to fall are current favourites.

My head actually feels like an electromagnet, or a pressure cooker with the tinnitus in the ears being the steam, and then I have a band of pressures running from ear to ear round the back of my scalp.

My cognitive processes have lessened, onky getting three hours sleep a night is ageing me physically, my ears feel inflamed the back if my neck feels inflammed my ears often block up in the way that would suggest ETD, I can hear all my own mouth noises, swallows etc real loud.

I think there is a core of us on here whose T has brought along a log if other cr@p with it.

I also have a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis which I have lived with for 12 or so years and they are a breeze compared to T and H.

I think if you have loud intrusive T and H it's inevitable you will eventually exhibit symptoms that are like chronic fatigue, as most are sleep deprived, you then end up with anxiety and depression

It's a who different ball game even from permanent low grade ringing

How do you manage to sleep in shifts. Do you take sleep meds ? I onky get one shot at sleep at night at about 11pm with a sleeping tablet I might be lucky to sleep from midnight to three or four

Have you got a system. I can't seem to drop off to sleep in the day, however tired

If I'm tired I can sleep no problem. I think I can sleep because I have no anxiety. I can sleep in any type of noise these days, washer and drier going, my gf doing dishes or vacuuming. This is one thing that T has taught me, I can adapt and sleep with exterior noise, or noise in my head.

I also feel I'm so exhausted from T all day that I kind of just pass out. I mean it's a nice relief from tinnitus, I have a tough time understanding why this wouldn't relax most people. I mean you get to get away from T for a bit, that alone should relax a person before bed. I'm the most tense when I get up and realize I have a long day of T to battle, not at night when all I have to do is lay there and dose off.

I'm sure sleep will come to you one day soon, there are a lot of people that have T so bad that they can't function during the day but sleep just fine. You will get there.

Hi Nic, about 2 weeks ago I saw a decent audiologist in my area and I took a hearing test and she checked my ears for different things like for fluid and ear pressure, etc. with something that looked liked it costed about 20 grand. No fluid and the ear pressure was in the normal range, but my high frequency hearing is bad now. Moderate loss in the right ear and severe loss in the left ear. My chart looked pretty sad, especially for the left ear. My left ear does have more pressure in it than my right one. I have some sessions of some type of training similar to TRT coming up with her shortly. God Bless...... Rich

Hi Telis, you're right, this T has a way of zapping a persons energy both physically and mentally. Hang in there my friend. God Bless...... Rich

@Richard Wallace
Did you have hearing loss from the beginning or is this developing? Do you mind me asking how your t started?
I'm concerned I have Ménière's but at the moment I do not have hearing loss.

Hi again Nic, being a stupid 50 year old man who never protected his ears for most of his life, I believe I have slowly developed hearing loss from even in my 20's from loud noise exposure. My T started all started out in late 2013 with some weird pressure in my head that over months then turned into pain and then the pressure spread into my ears. Dizziness soon followed along with the ringing. It slightly lifted for a few months last Summer.(2014) Then it started ramping up again last Fall and hasn't left since. I hope this info helps you some. Rich

I am in this for almost 19 months. It is still bothering me every day. I developed lots of other issues in the meantime, feeling a total wreck. I had my cortisol tested by a saliva test and that told me that I hardly make any cortisol. So also the thyroid is not working properly. Adrenal Fatique . Very difficult to treat in my case. Because one needs to relax to recover.
Maybe it is an idea to look into?

How is that any help? What is even the point of your comment? Is this some kind of pissing contest now?
Absolutely not. Interesting how so many people suffering from T become so aggressive in their misery. What I meant was that there can be so many many many associated symptoms or symptoms which appear to be associated that it should not surprise people. It should also not surprise us that doctors have no clue but even after years of bizarre neurological symptoms for some reason I'm still surprised by their lack of knowledge, lack of common courtesy and lack of interest.
