BEWARE of the ECoG Test! Made My Tinnitus Much Worse

I am ok. it's permanently higher. I am living with it. inside the house, I try to keep speakers with ACRN on in the background at home.
I took Lexapro for other health problems. The sound level didn't get lower. But outside home, I hear it much less. but in the house i hear it over anything even TV sound at the highest. Its just maybe outside the house, given that I am walking, taking Lexapro and extra nature sound, I hear it much lower.

You should do an audiogram and dpoae to see if you have more hearing damage.

Do you still have Hyperacusis? I still have severe hyperacusis on my right ear and Severe Tinnitus on my left ear. Some hyperacusis on my left ear remains.

Hi @dpdx

I've been following your story since I started visiting this forum earlier this year, and find your story compelling (besides heartbreaking). I was wondering how you're doing in general overall terms. Do you feel you're making any progress at all? -- I'm at the 6-month plus mark, and I feel I'm noticing little things here and there indicating things are starting to shift for the better, albeit at a glacial pace. But I wasn't sure for the longest time whether it would even happen at all. -- Anyway, I hope things are improving for you in some measure. -- All the Best!

Hi Lane,
Thank you for your question. I am not seeing any improvement in Tinnitus or Hyperacusis or Visual Snow. Last year in September/October I had intrusive tinnitus for about three weeks or so then dropped to mild tinnitus and I was making rapid improvements until my ENT made me take stupid ear tests to rule out if I had brain tumor, meniere, cochlear, etc. Remember you only get so many chances before you make it permanent. My T used to be a 2/10 and now it is 7 or 8 on the scale. I have 5 different tones which change daily, they are the same loudness but not all of them are intrusive. I developed hyperacusis in my left ear on January 27 and right ear on January 29. I will be doing another audiogram in 2-3 weeks to see if my hearing has improved or not.

yes its still there - milder though that the very beginning

do you hear it in public?

7-8 normally with few good days (good days = i can go out and not hear it in public or watch tv while not listenting to it)
Mine is always bad. I lost a lot of hearing because of that test.

i understand the frustration and no way to reverse it...
life is not fair.. simply..
continue with what you have and try to be happy..

This is your baseline now as is mine. I cant believe 98 db ear test administered for a minute can do extensive damage.

My Audiologist said ecog, ovemp, acoustic reflex should not be done on an damaged/fragile ear. We have permanently increased ours. The ovemp caused me to have more inner hair cell damage.

Doctors using people as guinea pigs to further their own medical agendas...might as well be wwII again.

I was FINALLY DIAGNOSED WITH AN ACOUSTIC TRAUMA after one year, damaged outer/innear cochlea cell, drop on 4khz, etc

i just want to forget what happened but ofcourse cant, because i hear it all the time. If i run into the audiologist that did this test to me, I don't think his face will stay intact

Can someone just tell me in a nutshell what an ECOG test actually entails? What a VEMP test is? I want to make sure to steer clear from anything like it during my ENT appointment.

VEMP and ECOG test pretty much test balance. They are loud and can cause permanent hearing damage to people who have hearing loss.

Tell me about it. I have Visual Snow, Dark Eye Floaters, Blasting Tinnitus, and Severe H which wont let me talk. The ear that was tested has the Severe Hyperacusis, it hasn't gotten better. I remember the day after that ear test my right ear popped and made a cool sound, this is permanent damage to hair cells and synapse ribbons. Thus my H will NEVER go away! It has been since January 29 and it has remained the same.

How long (time duration) was the ECOG?
How loud was it?
Did you get Hyperacusis?
Did you test your ears (hearing) after that

For me. I talked to the audiologist who did that ovemp test on me, she said its cvemp and its actually 90db nhl. no risks associated with it. My was only for 1-2 minutes, usually she says its 14-15 minutes.

WE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOISE INDUCED HEARING LOSS/NOISE TRAUMA ARE PRONE FOR MORE DAMAGE, WHICH WILL WORSEN OUR TINNITUS. THE EAR TESTS (CVEMP, OVEMP, ECOG, ACOUSTIC REFLEX, TYMPANOMETRY CAN PERMANENTLY WORSEN OUR TINNITUS. PLEASE BE ADVISED.

After the acoustic trauma I had like 3 audiograms. The first one showing normal hearing but my t was loud....

The second audiogram showing a nild hearing loss. I felt a lot of fullness so the ENT told me that making a small hole in the ear drum shouls relief that fullness...well he did it. I think I loss more hearing but could of be that or the next hearing test I had done 2 weeks after...ecog, ar and tympanogram. All of them were done.

I feel so bad inside I have a very intrusive t in one ear and pain.
The pain wasn't there at the beggining...and the h wasnt bad....I could of think that maybe the audiograms, with the stress could have gotten me this way.

I feel stupid....My mistake was to go to that loud place, a year ago my life was completely different. Now waiting for a cure but none one knows by when....hoping researchers get their work going.... Daily struggle having intrusive t...and h and pain and anxiety.

I have intrusive tinnitus, bad hyperacusis, visual snow, black eye floaters, entopic phenomenon.

Your Tinnitus is permanent now and will not change, neither will mine. I regret doing that stupid test so much. I am 10000x worse now than I was last year. I hear mine all the time and on top of that I have Severe Hyperacusis on the ear that was tested, there is damage to inner hair cells becsause of that test (Stupid ENTs)
How about TMD?

You don't feel your ear full anymore?

Both my ears feel full. The left ear feels like somewone put cotton balls inside. I am sure that 70% of inner hair cells have been damaged.

You should consult a medical malpractice lawyer. You have a lot of documentation. Even these posts can be used as evidence. You might be able to find one that will take your case for free but they get 30% of the winnings.

My friend had a case for something else and they took it on commission because they knew they would win.

If the lawyer asks you to play up front, he is not confidant. Med Mal is tough to win so if he wants money up front then you can probably just walk away and consider it too hard to win.

Anyways I'm pretty sure an initial consultation is free. Just to get an idea if a lawyer is confidant.

I know it won't make your ears better but having a little bit of money to deal with the stress of this condition is better than nothing.

EDIT: K i jsut googled vemp test dangers, and looks like there are known risks if they overexpose you: https://www.ingentaconnect.com/cont...rt00005?crawler=true&mimetype=application/pdf

I think they did something wrong or at the very least did not inform you of the dangers. Take this to a lawyer and see what they say. 've read a lot of your posts and you are pretty severely disabled right now (no offense).

Hello to everyone on this thread. I am looking for some help/ information.

Two weeks ago two girls screamed in my class (I am a teacher) and caused my left ear with T to feel full and I got a new high pitched ring.

After ten days with no ease, I went to an ENT on Saturday 29/09 to check that I had no hearing loss. However this appointment has caused further issues.

Without any explanation, the nurse put a rod in my ears that emitted a flux of loud sounds for only a short time, a few seconds, then I had the normal hearing test. From that day, I am experiencing popping to sounds in both ears and some pain too.

Could anyone shed light on what test the nurse did and if you had similar symptoms, did these pass with time?
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

She said it was 90db nhL but I feel like it was 100db-105db.

Probably acoustic reflex.

@Dizzyhead888 can you give us an update? Since we are on the same boat.
same as last month
"7-8 normally with few good days (good days = i can go out and not hear it in public or watch tv while notlistenting to it)"
Hypercusis is still there - car/motorcyle brakes sound, cars breaks while driving - I hear them so high. can jump from my place sometimes if i am surprised by it

Have you done an audiogram? My newest audiogram looked crazy with drops on both ears. I have mild hearing loss in noise in areas, according to speech in noise, since the CVEMP damaged my hearing.
Our H and T will be permanent now.....we have to accept our new life with limitations.
How loud was the ECOG and how long did it last?
