Hello.

I've always suffered with tinnitus, I habituated and didn't find it debilitating; it's a genetic predisposition from hearing loss as most members of my family suffer with varying degrees of severity. However, about two weeks ago, I suffered a spike in tinnitus that I can only describe as an aeroplane jet in both ears and a high pitch Eeeeeeee that's relentless! It's unprecedented and no one is my family can really empathise as they are so resilient after years of habituation.

Unfortunately, my thoughts have gravitated to a very dark place... and I found that the only difference is that I've been prescribed and taking lymecycline for acne for the last three months. The disparity between pre-lymecycline and this current noise is absurd!

Does anyone else have experience with this antibiotic? This sound isn't livable with. I honestly cannot cope long term. My doctor prescribed Amitriptyline to mitigate the noise and anxiety but it's only compounding.

I've never experienced such deterioration so quickly and I'm terrified of permanent damage.

I have no experience with the acne med. Amitriptyline spiked me though. Changed the tone of my tinnitus and the intensity as soon as it kicked in. Also made my hyperacusis more sensitive.

I'm having the same side effect after a single dose so I shall be discontinuing it tonight. Amitriptyline did induce sleep but I awoke an hour later to louder and intrusive Tinnitus.

As for Lymecycline, a few hours research yield few indications of its oxotoxicity but the group of antibiotics it belongs to, tetracyclines, can cause ringing in the ears.

I sincerely hope after stopping it, the tinnitus returns to its baseline but I'll take just a slight reduction and be grateful.

Hi,

I've just come across your post above when searching for any correlation between worsened tinnitus and Lymecycline. I have had mild tinnitus for 5 years and after taking these tablets for 12 days my tinnitus has suddenly spiked to a loud continuous un-ignoreable ringing. It's driving me crazy but I'm on these tablets to help with a skin condition so I'm reluctant to stop taking them.

Did you stop taking them and find that your tinnitus improved?

Thanks in advance
Gemma

I have started taking lymecycline last April 2020 but unaware is related, my tinnitus got a lot worse to the point where it got really difficult to function with my daily life. I felt isolated and alone. Months on with seeing my GB and so on, I came upon this forum, and it suddenly hit me that the only change I had since the tinnitus spiked was taking lymecycline for acne! So on 16th of July 2020 I stopped taking it and from day 2 I started noticing the difference and my tinnitus is a lot lower and manageable and I feel much better. Thank you so much everyone that has posted about this here, you have helped me greatly I cannot thank you enough. Yes definitely lymecycline is a cause for tinnitus to spike and get louder at least that was in my case. I decided to post so maybe someone will benefit from my experience.
