Constant Pain in the Left Ear

Help. Extreme pain in right ear. I am using ice but is heat better?

I don't know why this is happening because it's usually my left ear that has pain.

I did put air in my car tire around 4:30 pm and my right ear pain started at 9:30 pm and now it's 3 hrs later and still in pain. 12:30 am.

It seems random but would a delay of 3 hours be possible?

I was going to use my muffs! Then I would at least know it wasn't from that or I wouldn't have the pain. :-(

My ear pain - left ear - is bad again. I had days of relief.

Again, no definite explanation or reason. It started hurting slightly last night and now, this afternoon, it's really painful.

I am starting to think it's from noise and not TMJ. The problem with diagnosing is I can't tell nor determine what noise will cause or exacerbate the pain. If it is noise induced pain, there is always a delay and I can't determine what sound or noise did it.

If it's from noise, I am fucked because I don't see how I can avoid this cycle. Noise and sounds are everywhere. I can't always wear earplugs or muffs. Normal sounds can cause the pain.

If it's not noise induced and something like TMJ, the pain always resides within the ear area. The only other area is just below and in front of the ear within that muscle. But, why would the pain occur or worsen randomly?

I hate this. The tinnitus is really high pitched and loud with crazy multiple tones but I have this repeating cycle of severe ear pain too.

I don't think I have encountered anyone on here with quite the same symptoms. Yeah, maybe similar but not resembling it enough - at least, no clear diagnosis that helped me. :-(

I talked to an radiologist friend about this. If you don't have a temperature then it's most likely the TMJ joint with input from surrounding muscles. Your jaw may not hurt, but the pain besides being within the ear would be just below and in front of ear. Without a temperature and pain behind the ear, most all other possible problems can be dismissed. Your problem would be from jaw pressure, but not a dislocated joint. The chance for infection within the ear is rare without a temperature.

You could also have an infected back tooth, but this may not be so. He said even the slightest jaw pressure will increase from emotional tension. Any allergies often just dust, can increase your problem. Blood flow problems due to neck arteries, abdominal and heart is possible, but that would cause thumping and humming sounds. He mentioned that bad placement of ear plugs or wrong ear cleaning methods may associate.

Treatment is to correct teeth issues, a mouth guard, warm compresses and turmeric curcumin. Maybe you also need vitamin D3, some magnesium may help, zinc and vitamin C. Drink enough water, eat healthy - fish and vegies. Don't sleep on stomach.

He also said to get hearing tests and blood pressure tests - if you do - post here or PM me with results.

The TMJ Healing Plan by Cynthia Peterson is worth reading. This book can be bought online for a few dollars.

The pain returned. This time it extends down my cheek bone at the top close to my ear. There's also ear fullness .

I was in a grocery store and some produce employee made a big noise with a crate, I think it was or a box. I can't think of what else happened before.

I am so damn tired of this.

The pain returned. So it alleviated from maybe Tuesday til now, Friday.

I don't know what caused it.

Do any researchers want to research my fucking ear pain? No?!? It figures. They are useless.

I will buy the two books on January 1st because I am broke until then.

I really want suicide though. I don't know anyone else here who has extreme ear pain and simultaneous loud tinnitus - in the brain so it's seemingly 'right through' both ears and the head.

The pitch is so high with multiple tones that it is torture and my ears feel abnormal but then an ear has so much physical pain including pain throughout the cheek bone closest to the ear - mostly the left ear but I have right ear pain occasionally.

The left ear pain is more frequent and particularly painful. I don't want to live like this but the pain and loud tinnitus is so intrusive and distracting that it's difficult for me to plan and concentrate on very complicated and psychologically devastating ideas - a suicide plan is difficult even if I didn't have this. :(

I hate living like this.

This post is very depressing, because the ENT may not be able to help either.

Here's a speech by president of Hyperacusis Research LLC, Bryan Pollard.

He started an organization to help connect patients with researchers to find treatments for "noise induced pain".

Based on what most people on this forum are complaining about, it's safe to say audiologists don't know much about noise pain, hyperacusis, noxacusis, cochlear nociception/neuropathy or whatever the hell you want to call it, or separate classifications should be of these conditions.

Just Pawel Jastreboff's dogma on TRT, or worse "It's all in your head" and maybe it will go away, no one cares about bio-medical research. Palliative medicine reigns with an iron fist.

It's scary I was in that same traumatizing experience when I realized ENT's just told me it would go away, they were right, it did, but the thing is if it didn't I'd be stuck on a bad merry go round like some folks here. It's a very raw deal in life to experience pain from noise for months after an extremely loud acoustic insult.

Hopeful post, thanks.

My left ear has severe pain again. I don't know what it's from. I don't think anyone here has both severe tinnitus and severe ear pain - not at the same time.

I had a dentist appointment a day ago but my left ear didn't have pain after. I guess it could be from bruxism and grinding during sleep? Or it's the ongoing cycle of unexplainable ear pain in my damaged, fucked up left ear. I hate this life. I hate being tortured with this. I can't wait until I figure out how to kill myself or I'll just try.

I had pretty bad pain in my right ear today. Earlier in the day just after I woke up. Mostly in or within the ear including in the canal. There's no recognizable explanation. I don't know why the pain suddenly came on.

This is the kind of shit we deal with. I know that loud noise can cause pain but this is another instance of no real event. I can sometimes identify a noise and then wonder if there was a delay but this time I didn't hear anything.

Wait for FX-322.

I have pain in my left ear too (my tinnitus ear). It's mostly in the middle ear/eustachian tube. I believe it's because of swelling after the trauma. My ear still feel kinda full.

Wait for FX-322.
I am hoping that FX-322 proves to be the answer for those of us with painful hyperacusis. Considering that the research is showing that the type 2 nerve fibers in the ear are activated in response to damage to the OHCs, it seems logical that hair cell restoration would be a potential solution to this problem.

Yes I honestly feel like this is the solution to the problem. My tinnitus and hyperacusis started simultaneously. I don't see why it can't that as well.

@Greg Sacramento, I don't know who to ask but anyone else is welcome and encouraged to reply.

I accidentally hit my ear last night.

It still hurts this morning and into the afternoon. It was mostly on the lower part with the bone and the outer cartilage but that wasn't much.

The tympani muscle or whatever it's called is really sore. When will the pain stop? I hope it isn't a significant problem or physical blow. The tinnitus seems the same meaning loud.

But, I have physical pain now.

This isn't like my usual left ear pain. I know what it's from. Actually, I haven't had any major ear pain lately - the type that is at the bone and in my ear.

That makes me so mad at myself because although my ears still don't feel normal, the strange pain hasn't happened in a while until this happened last night. I was hoping it would be feeling better already. :(

Before this event, it's been just my tinnitus that has been the source of my suffering. When I have ear pain on top of that, I want to plan suicide.

I have a similar problem. Pain comes with a delay after loud sounds. I've been at home all the time for a year now, and I don't go out much. If you spend a lot of time in silence, the pain goes away. I wear cotton wool in my ears even at home. And if I sometimes need to go outside, I use custom earplugs. Earlier in 2012, I had a similar injury from headphones, and I was able to fully recover.

Hope the ear feels better man. Good to hear your regular ear pain hasn't been acting up lately though.

I'm sure it'll be back to normal soon since it's just from accidentally hitting your ear.
I am so mad at myself. I hope you are right. It's just below my ear in the bone and muscle area. I don't know why it's still really sore and I am in pain.

It's bad enough with loud tinnitus. I am inclined to think hitting myself there is making the tinnitus continue but I know it was already there. I wish science was more advanced and could repair our ears. It must be a way to solve or reduce tinnitus? But, no one can do it. :-(

What do you mean by recover? I think I had the same issue as you do when I first got tinnitus. Except the latest ear pain is not hyperacusis or pain from sound. I accidentally hit myself just below my ear on the bone and muscle area there. Not really hard but I guess it was hard enough for pain over two days now.

People here who say hyperacusis can eventually heal or lessen are exactly right. I can't remember when I had significant pain from noise. Although I had the same thing: the pain wouldn't occur immediately after a noise. There was a delay. Other times, it just didn't seem like it was caused by noise. But, the frequency and duration of pain became less and less until now. Except, this time it wasn't from noise. There is a lot of noise in this area too. I live downtown and I don't have the money to move to a different area. I live in subsidized housing as I had to quit working.

My loud tinnitus is still the worst problem although I hope my ear heals soon. :-(

The pain is still there. I thought it was a bit better this morning but I still feel pain and discomfort in the same area.

Why is this happening?!?

I am really worried about this.

If anyone reads this and you have similar ear pain, how long does it last for you? I am not sure but I would guess it's two weeks straight of constant pain as of now. I don't know how much more I can stand.

I should be allowed to get percocet or oxycodone. This pain is worst than a typical ear ache. I fucking hate doctors. I hate their guts.

I also have a further 'complication' or problem. I don't know how to describe it though? Fullness? It's not normal. I have occasionally crackling but this 'hollow' sensation accompanied with pain is really troubling. This feeling became more noticeable today. I don't know what that condition is called though or if my description is sufficient for anyone to have a clue about what I am talking about.

My ear kind feels like it was impacted within the cartilage or there's inflammation. I dunno... it is worse at times and other times, it's just discomfort and the ear doesn't feel normal or as it should. I don't know what that is indicative of. Hyperacusis or something else?

I do know that every time I have visited a general physician for an ear problem, they have never been helpful.

What does it mean when your ear feels plugged or clogged during running water (e.g. kitchen faucet)?

I thought maybe some form of ETD? I only became really aware of it just now (a few moments ago). It was only my left ear and went away or at least the feeling/sensation did when I stopped running the water.

Can this go away?!? :(

Read about geniculate neuralgia. I am certainly not an expert. I do know that most doctors know little to nothing about it.

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK!!!!!

If no specialist can do anything and no fucking doctor will give me narcotics for pain, why should I go on living like this?!?!?!?!?

I am tired of this fucking ear! If this is hyperacusis, it won't ever change. Nothing out there even treats this.

Have you gone to pain management? They might be willing to prescribe a narcotic. I'm going to pain management to try some stuff soon.

How? How do you go from trying to convince a f***** jerk physician that you are in significant and severe pain to going to pain management?

My left ear is in increased pain again tonight. It was bad today but increased in severity in the last half hour. I don't know why or what happened. :(

My GP doesn't prescribe pain meds but gave me a pain management referral. Just ask for one. It seems that for most people that want legit pain medication, they have to go to pain management. Unfortunately for me, I can't get in right now because of the damn coronavirus.
