Hi, in order to treat an abrasion/cut in my mouth, it was suggested to rinse with salt water or Listerine. I'm afraid to do either, and I realize that my paranoia is reaching new heights. The last thing I need in an infected cut. Opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think salt water is a good idea, I do that when I have bad mouth ulcers and it helps.

Are you worried about infection because of antibiotics?

Hi, thanks for replying. It seems that any medication I take results in a 10-12 hour spike, so I try to avoid medications as much as possible.

I forgot to mention that using salt water will also result in a spike, so can't win either way...

Recently I realized that consuming foods high in salt spike my T. However, I have been in the habit of rinsing my mouth with a salt solution for a while now (in an effort to reduce the chance that I get cavities that would require a loud drilling), and it hasn't had a negative impact on my T.

Your paranoia is reaching new heights.

You're asking about finishing with salt water, two vital components for the human body to survive.

Think about it.

No, the salt really spikes T in some people, it spikes in mine by 10 folds.

I once ate a pickle and got an insane spike for 3 days.

Rinsing with salt water should be safe as long you're not swallowing.

So how do you cope with salt already added to food?

salt spikes my T but very temporarily. I eat it anyway because I'm not going to let T control my life. However, I do read the sodium content on most foods and if it's crazy I dont eat it because it's unhealthy and if T is going to do some good in my life at least it can make me eat healthier!!!!

Isn't some degree of salt essential for the human body though Bill or is that a myth?
The body needs only a small amount of sodium (less than 500 milligrams per day) to function properly. That's a mere smidgen — the amount in less than ¼ teaspoon.

There is naturally occurring sodium in all food, and you can easily get the small amount of sodium that you need from food, without having to actually add salt to food. If you are concerned about it, add 1/8th of a teaspoon of salt daily to one of your dishes, to be absolutely sure.

First of all I'm talking about something moderately salty. its not exactly the same thing. diabetes can be life threatening whereas what happens to me is temporary as in spike for a few hours with no threats to my health as opposed to something that is crazy high in salt, which I wont eat.

@Allan1967
You can't taste the sodium in low-sodium vegetables, and they're still a healthy diet choice. Vegetables with 140 milligrams or less of sodium per serving include:

  • Bell peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Radishes
  • Sweet potatoes

So you need 4-5 servings of vegetables, and from that point on you are going over. I eat about 3 lbs of salad for breakfast, so my guess is that I get all of the sodium my body needs just from my breakfast.

It is possible that one can get these spikes for decades and the severity/duration of the spikes will stay constant or will even eventually decrease. It is also possible that eventually doing stuff that causes spikes on a regular basis will lead to a permanent increase in severity. I have no idea how likely any of those outcomes are. It makes sense to me to play it safe and to not do anything that I know will result in a spike (albeit a temporary spike).

My husband has had T since basically 05, never went on a board about it, doesnt give it thought and gets no spikes from anything. He says I pay more attention to it, whereas he tunes it out and it goes away and he doesnt care. He had a bomb go off next to him in Iraq. A BOMB!!!! I over focus and over protect and am a hypochondriac. Im just tired of caring about it so much. And guess what? As soon as I stop caring so much it actually bothers me less.

mine is about half of what it was a month ago. almost 5 months in. i am counting my lucky stars and hope it continues. I think it all depends on how loud you hear it.
