Denver Man Gets Gene Therapy to Restore Hearing

when we will know if this man restored hearing, and what is happening, will the virus as all the previous attempt cause cancer (from 1 year to 10 years)
By the time a hearing loss treatment becomes available they will have also found a way to cure cancer....:D
If you add the time for it to develop, well that gives them about 20 years...

population of earth will be 9 billion and poverty will be common as we will destroy nature so there will be no point in curing deceased/sick/ill.

Curing cancer is impossible, as there are so many different types...There's hundreds of different types of cancer, rare and whatnot. Tinnitus is more straightforward compared to cancer.

That was a good one, and probably true.

Do you mean the 100% jump in early January...or the 30% slump since February 9th. - which coincides with the actual first patient being screened in the Kansas City trial?

I just came across this Facebook page on Dr. Staecker and it appears to have some positive results posted by someone who has been treated with CGF166:

Just touched down and reached Kansas City again smile emoticon I have post op visit in the morning and I get my ear checked checked out and the packing taken out too I'll let you guys know how it goes its been so weird the past couple of days I could here myself when I am humming in the right ear it's not clear but it something new for me and I never could hear myself in the right ear before even though its not much. I know it takes a while for the haircells to grow but I am just to excited and hope it just keeps getting better.

Yes, it looks like the up's und down's goes analog to the media resleases.
But in genetal, it's very uncommon that a trial from such a big importance is presented in the media with almost no info about the outcomes

Great find. This must be the girl that was dosed that we were trying to get information on.

unfortunately, last update was from the 4. February.... so I don't know if this is a good sign....hope I'm wrong.

what's more encouraging is this opinion about ATOH1 and hearing loss written from an Australien
scientist:

"Expert opinion:
Gene therapy can be safely delivered locally to the inner ear and can be targeted to the sensory epithelium of the cochlea. Expression of the Atoh1 gene in supporting cells results in their transformation into cells with the appearance and function of immature hair cells but with the resulting loss of the original supporting cell. While the feasibility of Atoh1 gene therapy in the cochlea is largely dependent on the severity of the hearing loss, hearing restoration can be achieved in some situations. With further advances in Atoh1 gene therapy, hearing loss may not be as permanent as once thought."

So, you loose your supporting cells and gable it works. If it doesn't, you don't have another chance lets say with a future more enhanced gene therapy. That's a bad one. Sucks big time. Big fat bummer!

I dont agree that curing tinnitus is inconsequential. Who ever gets the golden ring gets billions of $.
I just dont know why it takes so long?
Because this is the next step for medical science - to invoke growth where there was none before.

It ain't easy but there's a lot more understanding about the subject matter nowadays.

Some Analysis about Genvec:

GenVec is developing human and non-human adenovirus-based gene therapies with its main asset developed for hearing loss and licensed to Novartis ( NVS ), currently in Phase 1. Part A of this study completed enrollment of three patients. Patients in Part A are treated with a volume of 20 microliter (mcl) and are assessed for safety. Part B, will have two to five cohorts of three patients each, will assess safety with escalating volumes of the vector and determine the volume to be administered in Part C, which will assess efficacy and will include a single cohort of about 20 patients. While Novartis uses discretion with regards to its clinical programs, we believe a safety update from this study (and potential early signs of response or gene expression) is possible later this year at a major gene-therapy medical conference.

#jeffinkc twitter hashtag indicates patient received a dosing today. I've asked if she knows what the dosage amount was since she previously indicated the patient was to receive a high dose than anticipated. Will update if I learn something.

great, thanks for any infos. I guess, this next round will be dosed higher. Hope that everything goes well
with the best result for the brave person in the trial.
Are there any news about the first person receiving this therapy? How are they?

Wow, so if they are increasing dose, then safety seems a go so far. This is good news. Probably we will see some efficacy in higher doses...I hope..I hope.

So do we have any more updates on Uncle Jeff or on Rob?

I tweeted Uncle Jeff's niece after the surgery who said that she would post more info and a video if allowed. Genvec's CEO on the last earnings call stated that info would be coming out at the discretion of Novartis. I have no idea how big pharma manages this kind of thing.

The clinical trial website https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02132130 has been updated to add an additional testing site that is recruiting.
