Did Anyone Ever Get a Spike from Crunchy Food?

Cause of Tinnitus
Noise Induced (multiple acoustic incidents)
I am wondering if crunchy food can cause spikes or even damage in compromised ears. I have no found a thread on here where someone is stating that. I just found few threads from people who were worried after eating crunchy food with plugs in.

If I eat chips/crisps, nuts, salad or onions, I have the feeling that it is really loud - and very close to the ear. That makes me anxious.

What are your experiences and opinions? My noise induced tinnitus is spiking from everyday noise already ... I am missing just watching a movie and having chips/crisps on the couch -_-

I am not knowledgeable enough to say 100% but I myself eat crisps, apples, popcorn etc with no issues. When my ears are more sensitive due to congestion, crunchy food does appear louder but again never had an issue.

@chaLLas I have not, but never tried eating with ear plugs in. Were you at a noisy restaurant?

I doubt this would be loud enough to cause damage.

I am even uncomfortable when eating crunchy food without earplugs in.

Many people come here and ask if they should worry, because they were exposed to an everyday sound. I am wondering that nobody seems to have had problems with that.

I even can't stand when my girlfriend is chewing crunchy food next to me because it is loud ... how can this not be dangerous if that is in your mouth and right next to your ear?

Even for phonophobic T sufferers, I must be sounding paranoid af -_-

Does your T spike after having those crunchy foods? Do you get ear fullness afterwards? Or does it just feel too loud/feels like it is irritating your ears?

Sounds like more hyperacusis, than the sound causing a T spike. How about some less crunchy food?

If I bite through something like a hard candy, after the impact my tinnitus rings a little louder, but it never lasts more than a second.

No way José....

Yes...brief ones.

I have avoided those foods as much as I could since I became so noise-sensitive (the last 2 or 3 months). When I had some crunchy food, I only ate few and chewed carefully ... I did not yet get ear fullness from that and no immediate spike.

But since it seams like nobody has had much problems with it, I think I will just try it out and get my phonophobia under control -_-

Yes I have. My tinnitus is very somatic I believe. Yesterday I had a bad spike as well, it made me pretty anxious. No idea what caused it since i was just sitting on the couch when it happened, however I was having a bag of chips before it happened so that could have actually been the trigger. I just thanked god this morning that it went back to semi normal. The worst thing about having this condition is the unpredictability I swear.

I never thought this would be an issue, but chewing some foods are very loud. My T has spike so much lately that I am looking at everything that could possibly be damaging my hearing more. I certainly am not ruling out loud food.

Yes, I definitely notice an increase in volume when I eat, especially salad or other crunchy or hard food. It is not the sound that bothers me. I think it's the chewing. I am going to try to only eat soft food or really try to eat slowly and gently and see if this helps. My tinnitus is a hissing sound. Sometimes it is so loud I think I am going to lose it. Sometimes just noticeable but always there.

Hi,

I've just eaten thin and crispy base pizza which was very crunchy / hard crust, I felt my tinnitus spike a bit in my left ear and my right ear felt funny slightly hissing. My jaw and wisdom tooth ( which is broken:() felt sensitive and a bit achy as well.

It's now about 10 mins later and the spike is going down although still louder than it's been all day

Could this all be related? TMJ? Irritated nerves?

Any response is a good one guys ;)

I was just eating some tortilla chips and was wondering if the loud crunchiness could be an issue, so I did a search and found this thread.

I see some people's tinnitus gets irritated by chewing. I think eating is the only time my tinnitus sort of disappears and I don't really notice it. I hope I don't gain 100lbs since it's very comforting.

Don't forget that salt has a big impact as well!

If you are getting serious tinnitus spikes afterwards, then there might be something to it. If you are NOT getting any spikes, then there is no reason to worry about it.

Hi Bill,

Do you remember the guy who did a clinical trial and had improvement in his tinnitus? He was a member of Tinnitus Talk. It was with Neuromod or Lenire. Does this sound familiar?

I like eating chips or nuts, though I don't all that often. For me, even working through some level of hyperacusis, eating crunchy food feels good in my bad ear. The vibrations are pleasant and even soothing to my worse ear that sometimes aches. It's also sound and feeling that distracts from the ringing if it's a bad day.
