Do Ears Heal?

Has it always been low, or has it been loud initially only to fade?

Like everyone that develops tinnitus especially when it is severe the experience is unique to them. To describe my tinnitus and severe hyperacusis as initially loud and then fade which they did, would not be giving a true account of what I endured and the treatment I had which was of immense help TRT that lasted 2 years. There are many here that do not like to hear about its benefits and prefer to convince themselves it is ineffective without ever having tried. I have had it twice and know it worked for me.

All I will say on this occasion is that my tinnitus reduced to a very low level and was only aware of it occasionally, which didn't bother me in the slightest. In 2008 that changed dramatically. Back to my tinnitus as it is today. Yesterday evening I mentioned the tinnitus was completely silent no noise at all. This morning upon waking, on a scale of one to 10 it was at 10. Very loud and intrusive and for no apparent reason. I am used to this now and no longer get overly stressed by it. I decided to relax a while and within 20 mins the roaring tinnitus suddenly went as if I had turned off a light switch. It went completely silent but this is no longer a surprise for it happens regularly. Equally, it can be loud and intrusive upon waking and remain at a high intensity until I take clonazepam to calm it down. Sometimes clonazepam isn't needed and it will reduce by itself. This is not the same as a tinnitus spike.

PS: I still use Tiex twice a day. If I reduce or stop using it my tinnitus will increase.

Is it the case that you would not be able to hear anything even if you were to insert earplugs/or put on Peltor muffs?
Is "Tiex" the right spelling? I tried Googling it, and I couldn't find anything.

I have experimented with earplugs earmuffs many times in the passed and they make no difference. I know what works for me. Clonazepam as and when I need it and my Tiex machine which I bought it in 2011 and it's helped me get my life back. Those that don't want to believe in it that's up to them. Like I said, tinnitus is unique and will affect each person differently and we all have to find out what works for us if we are going to live our life and get some happiness. I do not prefer the alternative which is to dwell in doom and gloom and always be miserable. Blaming the government and the medical profession for not finding a cure. There are many medical conditions that cannot be cured at this time but like tinnitus, with certain treatments and a positive attitude a person can get their life back.

I am not saying that earmuffs would be helpful. I am just trying to find out whether you are hearing silence, or whether you are hearing T that is still there, but is too quiet to hear easily.

I agree that doing the above is silly.

I see what you mean. When my tinnitus is silent meaning there is no noise. If I insert earplugs or use earmuff there is still silence although, I am aware of the sound of my Auditory system which I don't believe is the same as the tinnitus. I know the difference for my tinnitus can be: completely silent, mild, moderate, severe and extremely severe.

I am aware of the sound of my Auditory system
How does it sound?

Do you ever hear silence when you are trying to fall asleep, or do you experience silence only during the day?

In any case, I am happy for you that you get days/hours of complete relief.

How does it sound?

Not easy to describe but it's totally different to when my tinnitus is mild, moderate or severe. When my tinnitus is completely silent and I'm tuning to my auditory system, which is something I prefer not to do, I can hear a very low level drowning sound..

Do you ever hear silence when you are trying to fall asleep, or do you experience silence only during the day?

If my tinnitus is silent during the day and I go to sleep that night, it will still be silent but I always have my sound machine on even when the tinnitus is silent. When my tinnitus is silent I sometimes wear my white noise generator too. I am so used to sound enrichment I find it strange being in complete silence. At I type my tinnitus is again, quiet but my sound machine is playing the background.

In any case, I am happy for you that you get days/hours of complete relief.

Thank you. It is something that I've had to work at. There were times from 2008 to 2012 I thought I'd never get my life back. I loved reading and was unable to read a book for 2 years now I can read again.

Please read this tread it explains all about Tiex and how it has helped me: https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/ti-ex-tinnitus-therapy.16887/#post-270486

@Michael Leigh If your tinnitus can change scales as much as you describe then you may be having cranial nerve VIII compression that reacts to your right auditory nerve (internal auditory canal). Stress can be an added reactor for this syndrome. Some use Carbamazepine for temporary relief.

You are lucky in one sense because there's only been a few cases where one will have their tinnitus turned off on a frequent basis from severe in a relatively short time. Trigeminal causes will not turn tinnitus completely off from severe within short time periods.

Stress does affect my tinnitus so I try to be calm as possible. You make some interesting points. As I said my Hearing Therapist and consultant are baffled by my type of tinnitus and as yet haven't met any patients with this type. They know of fluctuating tinnitus but my tinnitus can be completely silent. Meaning there is no noise at all. Then it can be mild, moderate, severe and can reach extreme severe levels. It is for this reason, I've mentioned in many of my posts, that there are limitations to habituation. If tinnitus is severe enough it is virtually impossible to habituate to and I fully understand that.

It was so low at times I completely forgot about it. That is the danger when someone habituates to tinnitus and it becomes so low they hardly hear it. They return to using headphones if the tinnitus was originally caused by "noise trauma" or going to places where loud music is played. Concerts, clubs etc without using hearing protection or visiting such venues too often. Hearing protection is no guarantee a person is safe. Sound can be transferred to the inner ear by bone conduction.

I never returned to using headphones. One evening I was listening to music on my HI-FI. A Haydn Symphony. It wasn't the "Surprise symphony" no-94 Yes, I've heard all the jokes from people when I've told this story. I was listening to his Symphony no-104 a beautiful piece of work. I turned up the volume and everything seemed fine. The next morning my tinnitus returned with a vengeance and got louder over the following days and weeks. I am not one hundred percent sure if it was that caused it as my hyperacusis did not return and has remained silent till this day.

Michael

Wow you have good taste :)

My tinnitus, hyperacusis and misophonia will trigger mild TTTS symptoms, which I now know is all tied to anxiety. It sometimes sounds like my hearing is getting lower, but this is not true, it is caused thinking too much about the various symptoms. I've had some of these other conditions' symptoms much longer than tinnitus. All in all, it's not too bad now that I have begun to understand the situation, and calm down.

Our body works in mysterious ways. Always keep in mind that there are people who healed after years.

Yeah? Who? How many??? I doubt it mine has gotten far worse than I have imagined.
