getting a splint this week (I clench my jaw a lot) Ive always done it but just realized this is something known to cause tinnitus. I have been avoiding clenching while awake, but I'm pretty sure I do it in my sleep as well. Anyways.... If I remedy my TMJ will this make my t go away as well?? Have any other had their tinnitus start with TMJ and be resolved?

A mouth splint will help TMJ also a few daily changes .
Simple things like cutting meat up small.
Cut Apple's in half.
No chewing gum...or hard sweets.
Try not over yawn.
Simple changes to help your jaw joint from getting inflamed.
I had to wear my guard in the day also but forgot pull it out when was eating spaghetti and turned my guard Orange.....it was clear plastic so I don't wear it no more of I can help it......lots of love glynis

should I change my picture to a fluffy bunny or some shit. No one ever replies to my threads :p.... really hoping this shit goes away when I start wearing a guard.

Hi Astro,
I love bunnies...lol.
I'm sure you will get some replies to your posts as TT is very active.
Wishing you luck with your mouth guard ......lots of love glynis

@Astro how did you know you had TMJ? Sometimes i think i might be clenching my teeth at night since this started.
Because i can make crackling sounds in my right ear by moving my jaw slightly and get crackling in ears when swallowing.
Also i got a mouth ulcer from what i think biting my cheek at night.
Do you think i might have it?

Yep. Same question as mine.

during any intense emotion. happy sad mad whatever I clench my jaw. during the day. I always wake up with a sore neck and what not, so I asked my doc about it and he came to the conclusion that it was my tmj acting up and causing the tinnitus since my hearing is perfect and ive done literally nothing to cause it besides the constant clenching. If you are like me and have a very stressful life... and have some slight anxiety from it. you might be clenching your jaw at night. id get your jaw checked out. If you notice yourself clenching your jaw when stressed at work and shit id say you are probably doing it at night as well... since your tmj is only a few mm away from your ear... it caquses it all the time. People always go to the ENT. fuck them they are special. a maxillofacial doc will be able to give you answer if its tmj brotha.(glorified dentist)

not to mention a few months back I had wisdom teeth pulled and others fixed.. the dentist either messed up my bite or having my jaw open that wide for hours mighta sped this all up.... I also notice the past few years when very stressed & clenching jaw. id have tinnitus come for like 5 seconds at a time and go away all together.. would happen multiple times a week. then one morning it was there for good. Been a month and a half now. If this sounds like you its most likely the same problem as me

There's no way to know for sure if it's from TMJ. I was hopeful that mine was from TMJ, and that it would go away, or at least improve, after getting a splint. I've had a splint for almost a year, and no real change, although it has helped with other TMJ related issues. It also probably doesn't help that I only put it in right before going to sleep, instead of wearing it all day like I'm supposed to.

From what I've read, it can take a year or two before the tinnitus starts to improve with the use of a splint.

Also, the most important question is do you have any history of listening to loud music/going to concerts/clubs/bars/playing in a band?

I am a stay at home father. I'm pretty sure its stress/jaw clenching.. Because I haven't been to a concert in years, if I listen to music it isn't loud because I have small children I don't really go out besides errands and grabbing food with people. I had my hearing tested and I have perfect hearing.

Hey Astro, same thing happened to an Auntie of mine. She developed T one day and went to every doctor and ENT known to man with no answers. After a trip to her dentist he told her that her bite was off and fitted her with a splint.A month later I believe she said it was and her T disappeared and hasn't returned since.Hope it's the same for you :)

Billy!!!! Thank you!!!

I might go to dentist and have him check, better than sittin on my ass feeling sorry for myself
gotta try everything man! I'm under the impression that most times tinnitus can be cured when the cause is found, unfortunately that can be a lot harder than it sounds and I feel people lose hope when it isn't a handful of things they thought it was. If this isn't it I'll listen to what my body is telling me and go from there. Hope you have a good day.

I think my situation may be similar. I find myself clenching my jaw a lot. Like you said Astro, any intense emotion, at work, or when I'm concentrating on doing something. This morning I noticed something if I open my mouth, lightly put a finger in both ears and slowly close my mouth again. My left ear is fine, however in my right ear (where I have the tinnitus) when my mouth is about 75% closed my ear canal makes a 'thunk' sound. What do you think, TMJ?

Can you bring us up to date? Did the splint help at all?

I have really bad TMJ. I was hoping that was the cause of my T. I spend a lot of $going to a specialist. He said he didn't know if my T was caused by TMJ. He also gets a ton of referrals from ENTs. He said ENTs don't know what is wrong with half the people who go to them, so they tell them it's TMJ or something else. In my case, I am pretty sure TMJ couldn't cause this kind of ringing.

Hows it going. I'm getting my splint in two weeks.

Haha me either. I'm starting to think my T isn't like anyone else's

TMJ can't cause T but it can make it louder. Problem is a lot of dentists just want to sell those guards and splints. You have to find a real expert and I don't just mean an oral surgeon. I managed to find someone who is attached to a university. Took me several months to get in but he is very good and hasn't tried to sell me a thing.

So it wasn't TMJ. After 4 months of nothing helping I started getting acupuncture for stress and blood circulation which helped a bit..... Now this part will sound crazy... I was searching YouTube for "tinnitus therapy" found this binaural beat 30 min "song" the first time I listened when it was done I took my headphones off and couldn't hear my t AT ALL for a few mins then it came back at a lower level... I did this everyday for only 1 ducking week and my tinnitus is GONE..... I didn't expect it to work but after that first time of the t going fully away for a few mins I knew it might help..... Binaural beats were never even brought up to me by a doctor.. Complete horse shit. Now o believe my t was caused by stress because binaural beat not only help t but is a stress management therapy as well.. If anyone is interested to listen to the track I'll post a link when I get to a PC.. If you think your t was from stress this shot works... I don't know why but sure as hell happy to have silence again

Sounded like when you leave an old tube tv on with a black screen. Could hear it over most things, nature masked it the best. Had it for 5 months. I'm sure the binaural beats helped cause in those 5 months it never let up

My t sometimes sounds like that, but i have others sounds.
thats great man, enjoy silence! :)

OMG, I just happened across this old post, and that binaural beat video is also something that has helped me immensely. I also have extremely high-pitched tinnitus that I can hear over everything (even sitting in a noisy plaza full of people, with mariachis 10 feet from me and loud church bells). I cannot sleep without. I wish it would "cure" my tinnitus as it did yours, but it gets me through the night and sometimes the day too. I also have terrible TMJ and will be seeing a orthopedic dentist in a couple of weeks.
