Doctor Prescribed Doxycycline — Terrified of My Tinnitus Getting Any Worse

According to an ophthalmologist I went to today, I have a nasty skin infection on my eyelid. It's not a stye but has gone beyond that. I had originally gone to the Urgent Care yesterday and they prescribed me Keflex (Cephalexin). The ophthalmologist today said that Keflex is not strong enough and won't do anything and I need take either Doxycycline or Ciprofloxacin. I chose Doxycycline as I have read Ciprofloxacin messes with GABA receptors. She also prescribed me some ointment to put in my eye: Neomycin/Polymixin B/Dexamethasone 0.1%

I'm terrified to take Doxycycline after searching around on the forum. I've tried calling other ophthalmologists to get a second opinion, but they apparently think it's okay to wait 1-2 months with an infection. I just want to know if Keflex can take care of the infection? When I search online it says that's exactly what it's prescribed for.

I have no idea what to do. I cannot handle my tinnitus getting any worse.

Everyone is different. I would take the drugs. If your infection gets worse, you risk way more issues.

You could try just the ointment for a few days to see if it starts to go away with just that. And you could ask for another antibiotic. Even if it's less strong. That plus the ointment might do the trick. Don't be afraid to 'make noise'. It's your body and if you don't feel comfortable with that antibiotic insist on a different one.

Thanks to the both of you for your responses.

I had taken 3 doses of the Keflex the GP prescribed me before going to the Ophthalmologist yesterday. The infection was actually looking and feeling worse so I stopped taking it since it didn't seem worth the risk. The Ophthalmologist insisted that the Keflex would not work and that I needed either Doxycycline or Ciprofloxacin, and to use the ointment.

I woke this morning feeling a little bit better but still terrible after only using the ointment yesterday. I gave in and took a dose of the Doxycycline. I will monitor it closely but not sure if I'm going to take any more. I also take 600mg of NAC daily so I'm hoping that will help protect me. I'm going to up it to two doses of 600mg daily for the next few days as I've seen some medical publications that that provided to some protection to ototoxicity in some studies.

I've taken Doxycycline in the past, before my tinnitus became bad, with no problems but I'm obviously very skeptical about taking anything anymore. Especially after my ENT made my tinnitus even worse with some audiology tests. I also think the Keflex might have made the static I have louder, but it's difficult to judge. There's no real scale for me to compare to with how loud it already is.

Don't be afraid to take more NAC if you want to as a precaution. I've been taking way more than 2x 600mg pills daily for a couple months now with no negative side effects.

I think that might be a good idea. The most I have taken was 1800mg for a couple of days when I got blasted by some speakers at a Best Buy.

I did end up taking it. I felt it did have a negative effect on my tinnitus, but I have either since gotten used to it or it subsided.

@kingsfan, I'm sorry I didn't see this post sooner. I would have commented and told you that my tinnitus was in fact caused by Doxycycline which I was taking for eye problems.

Glad you didn't have any real issue with it though.

What kind of negative effect, how bad was it? Do you think it may have been anxiety or a real increase? Any new tones etc...?

A new ultra-high pitched sound yes. And a sound that I can only describe as "electricity" surging through my head. Same thing happened when I tried Gabapentin.

I've had chronic blepharitis since I was 16. My eyes are sensitive to everything. I only use Occusoft Baby eyelid cleansing cloths. Anything else makes my eyelids inflamed. Warm compresses used to help, but the heat has warped my corneas a lot so I don't do them any longer.

Not sure what you question means? But to me, seems like meds, noise or stress induced tinnitus have different signatures.

Seems like the stress induced tinnitus tends to go away... well, maybe 90% of them.

The noise and med induced tinnitus seem permanent.

Sorry I meant the type of sounds… which yeah there probably isn't a correlation. Like medicine induced usually causes high pitch or squeals vs noise induced causes ringing… just an example.
