Just to let you guys know that we have decided to have a Skype consultation with Dr Sanchez to see if she can help our son. He developed severe somatosensory tinnitus on lifting some weights a year ago now and has not improved one iota. If anyone has not heard of Dr Sanchez, she runs her own tinnitus clinic in Sao Paolo, as well as being involved in tinnitus research through her role as Associate Professor at Sao Paolo University. I see that her videos on this forum have had thousands of views in total.

I don't really know an awful lot about Dr Sanchez, but I had spent a bit of time looking at:
  1. the Tinnitus Research Initiative diagnosis and treatment flowchart at http://www.tinnitusresearch.org/index.php/for-clinicians/diagnostic-flowchart ,
  2. the Frontiers paper on 'Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Somatosensory Tinnitus: A Scoping Review' at http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fnins.2017.00207/full and
  3. chapter 43 in Textbook Of Tinnitus ed. Moller, on 'Tinnitus caused and influenced by the somatosensory system', written by Sanchez and Rocha.
as well as watching her videos

and felt that talking to her might be a good idea, as she co-wrote 1 and 3 . Although I still feel I have merely scratched the surface of the literature....finding the best thing to do for our son was starting to feel like an infinite task, so I had to give myself a deadline for coming to a decision!

He is currently seeing some good and supportive professionals - having TMJ and cervical spine physio as well as seeing a dentist with special interest in tinnitus- but I thought maybe Dr Sanchez might have some extra ideas and/or guidance.

It's minimum effort, apart from a ton of blood tests that had to be done and compiling all the results of tinnitus and hearing tests done so far. It has made me realise that we haven't yet had the vast majority of tests done that Dr Sanchez has asked for the results of. So maybe something will come out of the new tests? I do hope so and will let you know what happens.

All the best.

She's very well known in Brazil. Please, keep in mind that in this field no doctor is a miracle worker and keep your expectations in check.

I know, Zug. Having tried so many approaches already, my expectations are just gently hopeful. Gotta have hope lol!!

Hiya

I have just posted about a flare separately but remembered I had promised to get back to you about our consultation with Dr Sanchez.

It went very well, we found her very personable and helpful. There can be difficulties with Skype in having smooth running conversations, but that was ok in the main.

She was the first person we have seen in a year who was a real expert in tinnitus and who worked on somatic tinnitus as a separate subtype. It was very refreshing to speak to someone on the same page.

Dr Sanchez had studied our 70 or so (!) page PDF of MRI reports, blood tests, health reports and correspondence that she had requested from us before the consultation.

She absolutely confirmed the diagnosis of somatic tinnitus (discounting metabolic and hearing problems from the reports and blood tests) - and gave us some suggestions on what to try from a therapy and drugs point of view, She was very open and willing to discuss many questions.

It was a good consultation and was certainly worthwhile , if only to talk to someone at last who understood the problem!

Definitely pleased we did it.
