Tinnitus comes in many different forms and intensities. Mild, moderate, severe and extremely severe. Some people with loud intrusive tinnitus have gone to extremes when they can no longer cope with it. I do not need to explain further. However, I agree with @Tyler Montgomery, there was something else going on here. Perhaps the woman that he was with and her son were giving him a difficult time? I don't know. I just don't think it's as cut and dry as that news article has explained. There was probably a LOT more than just tinnitus going wrong in this guys life. Tinnitus alone cannot drive an otherwise mentally stable person to commit such crimes.
In the vast majority of cases, Drs. are correct, tinnitus doesn't kill you. I know several people with it including my girl friend. This criticism is levied all the time against Drs. Guess what? There is no cure for tinnitus to date. What else can they tell you? People have no choice but to accept it or it will ruin their life. Drs. only know what they are taught in school. They invent nothing. All they do is parrot what they are taught and in general are more enlightened than the lay public who are even less educated. As the OP maybe he did have other issues thing is it is happening out there because of T ,,,there may be a feeling on here about not putting this stuff up and I get that but this has to be put out there IMHO if only to stop Drs saying "get on with your life it wont kill you" well guess what Doc it can and does.
From another forum I quote I am saddened that I have only just found this site. Unfortunately it is too late for my brother who committed suicide nearly 3 weeks ago. He had suffered from severe tinnitus for 3 1/2 years and this had led to depression and severe anxiety. He was amazing at managing it for peiods but would have several periods of severe depression linked in with his tinnitus suffering. It was clear from what he told us that his action to end his life was ultimately down to the inscessant noise in his head caused by the tinnitus.
From a grieving family I urge all people suffering from this seemingly misunderstood condition to please refrain from ending your life.
If anyone knows of any research regarding tinnitus and suicide I would be really interested to read it.
We are at the beginning of our grieving and understanding about the distress that the tinnitus caused my brother.
What else can I say. I hope that there are ways to keep your hope alive.
This is a truth, and like all of us, what we add to that knowledge from our various schools tends to come from later experience, and what comes our way and draws our interest. Medicine is for the most part a career in which people choose what they will and won't do, depending on reward, be it financial or personal fulfillment. Tinnitus does not loom very large in a lot of practitioners lives or choice of career path at this time (as our ENT visits have shown the bulk of us), and really, until you have it you don't really understand much about it, so those who do go into it usually have a personal motivation to do so......rambling I know....Drs. only know what they are taught in school.
What is MVD?@carlover
I think suicide due to t is somehow kept undisclosed.
To be honest even me having severe and moderate episodes cannot fully remeber after a moderate episode of a couple of days why t can be so distressing as it is when its severe. If it gets severe again I cannot believe that it's going to be managable again.
Another example is my girlfriend who knows my tears and my suffering for months now and still asks me why I cannot just adapt.
About statistics I recently read this article about MVD. 2 out of 72 patients committed suicide in the follow up period.
I'm guessing here I have to say. It could also be Micro-Vascular Disease. What is MVD?
Very sad story. I believe there was more to this unfortunate incident than tinnitus.

If my Tinnitus ever became extremely severe then I would end it all for sure. I had it for three weeks back in January and It was like I had a jet engine inside my head. I couldnt do anything at all! at least with severe t I can still go hiking and stuff. It is terrible and I do wish that I had gotten cancer/AIDS in 25 years then have Severe T for rest of my life. I pray to god that no human being experiences severe or extreme tinnitus.
how did you lessen the intensity of the jet engine?
I pray to god that no human being experiences severe or extreme tinnitus.
My tinnitus is variable from: complete silence, mild, moderate, severe and can reach extreme severe levels.

@dpdx,
I have sever bilateral tinnitus for many years and never get a break.
I don't know what it's like no more to here silence and have many more years to live and I do want to live and enjoy every moment I can as I do.
Tinnitus can play mind games with you but eventually you become stronger and the emotional reaction will change .
I hear mine over everything but just couldn't give a dam no more what my ears get up to as long as im not in pain and can hear.
