Hi,

I have been reading this forum to get me through the past few months and the people and info are wonderful. It has answered so many questions for me.
I know that I am supposed to habituate and have been trying so hard. It's a losing battle so far.
I also suffer from severe chronic neck, nerve and back pain which keeps me up at night too. The sounds I have are haunting and so fast and erratic, that it's hard to find any masking agent or way to not react to it.
Like others here have posted many times, I too, am at my wits end trying to find a cause and feeling as if I may not be able to go on anymore from lack of sleep and trying to hold down my career of 18 years.
I was told by 2 ENT's that my jaw was likely a source and to deal with it by masking. Or to have trigger point injections etc. I did and still the T.
When it first started Ihad the H and distorted sounds, fluid in the ear, high frequency hearing loss (normal for age) flat tymps, normal tymps, stiffened eardrum, no infection.
Yet the ear symptoms are pressure, and constant low tone humming, buzzing, droning, bass pedal sounds. Not a second goes by that they are quiet. I had quiet one day right after the steroid injections to the jaw, masseter and SCM/Trap but that was so short lived. If I shove my finger in my ear kind of hard, the tones die down a bit.
I prayed for the madness to stop. I am worn down and fragile and my ear feels like someone is pulling on it. If I touch the outer ear the tones all change and vibrate.
I have worn ear plugs for 20 years for sleep and feel maybe that has caused damage. Who knows.
I know I am reaching out for answers and no one can tell me what to do or what is wrong, but I feel if I put this out in the open, it may be a step for me admitting that I may be stuck with this for life. I feel like I am racing against time to find a cause so that I have a small chance of eliminating or lessening the volume....IDK...
Thanks for Listening. Sleepless and coming undone......

PS. Does anyone have anything very similar in tone or feeling like a whirring is going by the ear?
I have had regular tinnitus tones on and off for years, but they were never 24/7 without a break and they were never low humming bass tones.
If someone has a story similar and has any advice on dealing with the fast irregular, deep scary tones, please let me know and thanks.

Hey SleeplessSoul. I don't have any answers to specific condition, but natural habituation can take anywhere between 6 to 18 months under normal circumstances. You may have to try some treatments like TRT or toughen it out in the meantime.

If the jaw is evidently the problem, maybe you should go and see a maxillofacial consultant to see if there is anything that can be done there.

Mark; thank you for responding.
I am currently seeing an oral surgeon who is very good with tmj and complex issues and he gave me the steroid/trigger point Injections which provided silence for just the next day. Then is came back that might.
Rube; I read that thread and thanks for sending. It could have started by me injuring the tendons in my neck and jaw while doing pt for another issue and I hady face down on the table which I should not so becasue of cervical disc disease. Also had been choking violently when falling asleep and jumping out of bed really quickly. (Dr said it was reflux) but I coukdnhave strained something

Did you get the reflux diagnosed and treated? Severe reflux can irritate the Eustachian tubes leading to t. Just a thought.

It can? The last ent I saw put a scope through the nose and said you have post nasal drip and reflux. She said to take some Prilosec but I haven't since it gives me headaches. Is there any trestment for the ETD if they are inflamed?

Also a thought, since the face buzzes upon touch, smile, chewing, etc I was thinking that the trigeminal nerve is irritated and I just read that trigeminal nerve can cause buzzing in the ears also.

All of your ideas are so good. I feel Like I may have some things I can work with now. Please excuse all spelling errors, working from my phone. thanks a million times over for ideas!

Try another medicine for acid reflux, check if it's ototoxic though, sadly I think most of them Are.
See this thread

Rube.

That was a great thread. I will have to look into the meds to see if they are ototoxic, and if so, I don't know what else to do.
I have used gaviscon which forms a protective layer in the stomach so the acid can't pass though it. Also, slippery elm tablets , licorice tablets and aloe to soothe esophagus along with sleeping at an incline. (This was in the past before t)
My eardrum feels vibrations and pressure even though ent said it was muscular. trying to get used to it. I must be a wimp because it really bothers me as its also a physical sensation that I can't even control with meds.
Thank you for your support.

New to this but you sound so similar to me. I was talking to my Hearing Therapist today and she said unequivocally to stop wearing earplugs (I have been wearing them for over 15 years). This isn't because they've caused damage, it's because they will prevent your mind from habituating to sounds and it will repeatedly isolate the tinnitus so that it is more apparent to you on a day to day basis. I now have to try to sleep without them (I don't relish it).

I also have TMJ. Perhaps an osteopath might help with aligning various things for you - to help your body work better. Can't hurt. Good luck!

That makes sense. I had to stop and I can't sleep without them. I was addicted to the quiet and comfort they provided.

I only wore them for sleep and yes, I think that made me worse. I miss them so much.

Sleeping with masking agents is keeping me awake because I am now hypersensitive to sounds...and my ENT told me that earplugs would never harm me.....:(
