Faith and Tinnitus

I'm no genius like Musk and Langan, but I refuse to accept the premise that the only realities that exist are the realities man can prove.

Man and his science are not my God.

I believe without concrete proof. I have enough evidence of my own. I don't need concrete proof.

Your statement reminded me of this quote regarding "faith" that I read years ago:

"To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible." - Thomas Aquinas.

Thank you! Was starting to feel like a religious fanatic which I'm not.

A prayer for those who suffer greatly:

Psalm 116

1I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
2Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.
3The cords of death entangled me,
the anguish of the grave came over me;
I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
4Then I called on the name of the Lord:
"Lord, save me!"
5The Lord is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
6The Lord protects the unwary;
when I was brought low, he saved me.
7Return to your rest, my soul,
for the Lord has been good to you.
8For you, Lord, have delivered me from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling,
9that I may walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.
10I trusted in the Lord when I said,
"I am greatly afflicted"

Hey Everybody,

Thanks to all for this engaging thread. I hope I don't offend anybody, but I have to say I found most of it quite entertaining and amusing--even had some good belly laughs. Even some of the back and forth sniping had some comical aspects to it. I found it interesting a fair amount of the sniping centered around Coffee Girl and Jazzer, who ironically, are two of my favorite people on this forum. I always seem to enjoy and appreciate their take on just about anything that comes up. I do hope they can eventually see in each other what I see in both of them. -- A few other thoughts below...

My take is there's a BIG difference between religiosity index and spirituality index.

Just to be clear, are you saying you think there's at least a possibility the world is flat?

And I bet none of these civilizations/cultures use the name "God" when referring to a "potential" supreme being.

Best to All! :)

You know what Lane - for a man of the cloth, you're actually an 'alright guy' - despite what the others all say about you!
No - I mean it brother - even though I may only agree with about 50% of your preferences!
(....tee...hee...) x

@85dB T & @Lane - I gotta a quote for you.

"Belief in truth starts with doubts of all truths, in which one has previously believed."
Friedrich Nietzsche.

"Now own up you two - have you actually doubted your previously held beliefs - and look at me when I'm talking to you....!"

Of course, it's human to doubt. (Mother Teresa is know for having her share of doubts.) For me I had more faith when I needed God. When everything was going my way I doubted. Sometimes I think God allowed my tinnitus due to this. As long as I have severe or intrusive T I will always stay close to God out of need. (if that makes God a crutch for the weak, who cares)

You quoted Friedrich Nietzsche. Here are four quotes of his which can be related to Tinnitus:

To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.

That which does not kill us makes us stronger
.
Sooner or later you will be needy. One thing for certain, all of us will suffer before leaving this earth.

For me, my faith is something I wish to die with. (some call this fear of death, who cares)

@85dB T - good quotes all.

I understand where you are coming from.
Your conviction is clearly a great comfort to you.
We all have to find our own ways forward.
Best wishes

This fish has a plan that requires mathematical precision.

You will never look at fish in the same way again.
Incredible!

I wonder if I am the only member of T.T. to have been stung by a puffer fish.
Swimming in Weymouth bay (Dorset - UK) in 1954 at age 12 years, I put my feet down to take a rest, and trod on a puffer fish.
Immediately, the pain was so intense, with my foot swelling up like a balloon.
My dad carried me up to the first aid hut, where they plunged my foot into a footbath with water as hot as I could bear, to draw out the poison.
They diagnosed it straight away, as puffers are endemic to that area.
They told me to keep breathing hard.
This natural venom, a living protein, can paralyse the diaphragm and lead to death by asphyxiation.
I got lucky that day.

Almost all pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin, a substance that makes them foul tasting and often lethal to fish. To humans, tetrodotoxin is deadly, up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. There is enough toxinin one pufferfish to kill 30 adult humans, and there is no known antidote.

Quite a story Dave (glad you surivived!) It reminds me of another story I read many years ago. A man got bitten by a poisonous spider, and his hand immediately swelled up to about twice its normal size. He went to the ER, where they wanted to do emergency amputation! Instead of going that route, he remembered a friend of his who did odd experiments with ozone therapy. So he called him and told him what was happening.

His friend had him com over right away, where he had him submerge his hand in water that was continuously being ozonated by his machine. Almost immediately, the pain and sweeling began to subside, and within hours was mostly back to normal. -- But of course we know not to believe or put ANY reliance on such anecdotal nonsense. After all, it has never been proven a treatment like this could be successful by "randomized double blind placebo control studies". (Is there an emoticon for snark?)

Note of Admission: I too can have somewhat of a "wicked" sense of humor at times, but I try to keep it reasonably in check--as best I can anyway. -- (Is there an emoticon for "Innocent Angel" ?) :)

For me is clear that there's no consciousness after death, because consciousness is a capacity of the brain, and when you are death you have no brain, it's that simple.

You are without a doubt incredibly brave and strong in your convictions. It's weird that faith.. Like T, is a very personal and deep relationship.

"Godly Coincidence", below is in my inbox today (from amaz0n) as well as the above (from a 'friend')...

"We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."
