I don't have a favorite art work but I have a lot of favorite artists. Living in ABQ back in the day, you got a schooling because so many people there were doing really strong work. It's still like that today. A very dangerous city, but there is no denying there are a lot of talented people there.
I remember going to The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art one day, and when I turned into a hallway there was a masterpiece by Max Beckman hung at the very end. It stopped me dead in my tracks. As I walked towards it, I saw another of his masterpiece paintings on the hall wall, and it was just as strong as the first one!
EDIT:
Finally found one. It's a very large oil, almost life size, and called
Frau bei der Toilette mit roten und weissen Lilien (Woman at Her Toilette with Red and White Lilies), 1938. It's an almost life size oil, he had scraped many things down and painted over them. Amazing composition, your eye goes directly to the center of the piece.
