Having Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Made Me Hate Plates

@Michael Leigh Plates Michael! Emanuel has a problem with plates!

The only way to treat this condition which is hypercusis is with "sound enrichment", to try and desensitize the auditory system to make it less sensitive to sound. In severe cases the wearing of white noise generators for up to 10hrs a day maybe required, and counselling with a Hearing Therapist or Audiologist who specialises in the treatment and management of Tinnitus & Hyperacusis. Keeping away from everyday normal sounds and the overuse of hearing protection will often make the condition worse, as a lowering of the loudness threshold of the auditory system can occur.

In many cases hyperacusis can be improved and cured as in my case, with or without specialist treatment.

I am currently reading a book by the author: Angela Marsons, called: Silent Scream and liking it quite a lot.

I like to read crime and thriller novels. My favourite author is Peter James. He is famous for his books featuring Roy Grace, a Detective Superintendent based in Brighton, Sussex on the south coast of England where I live. I recently finished book 14 in the series: Dead If You Don't. October the 4th he will be publishing a standalone novel: Absolute Proof, and hopefully I will be attending his book signing as I have done on many occasions.

All the best

Right now i am going through all of jane austen and edith wharton books. But my favorite series is definitely Agatha Christie's Poirot adventures. @Bam & @Vicki14

as with you two - there has been so much unbelievable horror in my life, even before the advent of 'T' - so would I watch horror for fun?

You are quite a reader and it's good that you are able to read different authors writing styles. Unfortunately that changed for me in 2008 when my tinnitus got worse after a 2nd noise trauma. I was unable to read for two years because the tinnitus was so intense and variable. I have written a post about this on my "started threads" titled: My experience with tinnitus.

In 2010 I tried to get back into reading but it was very difficult. Each book I started within a few days I put it down never to pick it up again. My tinnitus was incredibly variable from silent, mild, moderate severe and extremely severe. Much of the time it fluctuated from moderate to extremely severe and I was eventually prescribed clonazepam which helped. However, reading was still difficult and I was beginning to accept that I would never return to it again. I was browsing Amazon and read a sample of a book from an author that I had never heard of, Peter James. I liked the sample so ordered the paper back as I didn't have a Kindle then. It took me around 4 weeks to finish the book due to my tinnitus. Even though I read it in segments and for two or three days at a time unable to read, as soon as I picked it up I got immediately back into the story.

I was captivated by the writing style of this author so bought the second book in the Roy Grace series and this impressed me also. I read the 3rd and 4th book. I then wrote to Peter James and explained about my tinnitus and that I was unable to read for two years. He replied to my email. I was living in London at the time (born and bred) and travelled to Brighton to attend a book signing with the author.

I have always wanted to live near the sea but never envisaged it. The way the author described Brighton I could easily imagine myself living there. Time passed and I wrote to PJ again asking if he can recommend some nice places to live in Brighton or surrounding towns. He wrote back with some very helpful information and I moved here in 2014.

You're not alone. Clanking plates KILLS me too. And I feel my hyperacusis is so much better than the original onset of the T.
