Help for Neck and Throat Spasms

Hi all

Back again , trying to help my son who damaged his neck while weight training and who developed severe tinnitus on the spot. That was a year ago and we seem to have got not very far in addressing it.

Playing around with neck muscles last week (only stroking gently and moving head slowly ) he felt a very sharp pain in his ear. He then realised he had hurt his neck muscle. Again. And the tinnitus has spiked horrendously. Again.

Now the pain in his neck is horrendous and continuous and he is getting the old horrible feeling of being strangled by his throat muscles . Does anyone please have any ideas to help?

We are booked in with the local specialist neck physio but we have to wait 11 days until the appointment, although we are on the cancellation list . So I am hoping that the physio will be able to help at that point. But that leaves us here and now.

So my son is currently on paracetamol and ibuprofen. Just about to add codeine on advice of pharmacist. Has been having some ad-hoc temazepam (3 doses of 20-30mg) but didn't seem to do a thing - so not taking that now.
He had been on nightly baclofen previously but that didn't help either. In fact not much makes a dent on the pain or tinnitus yet.

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with anything that addresses this type of pain?

My heart goes out to you and your son. As a parent it must be horrible to see your son in such agony and be helpless to help him. Before this setback did your son have any improvement in his T over the last year? I think you are on the right track to have a specialist find out what's going on with his neck muscles. It seems that is the cause of his T, and if you can find and treat the neck problem, the T will probably fade away. I will keep you and your son in my prayers.

No, he doesn't feel that there has been any improvement at all really. We will just keep looking . We spoke to Dr Sanchez in Brazil and she urged us to find someone well versed in myofascial trigger points plus someone to work on the bones of the upper back .
We have just found a new physio who supposedly specialised in necks. His assessment apparently didn't seem that tuned-in but we will persist to give him a chance.
I will report back if/when we find the answer!!

I wish you luck in finding some treatment for his neck. I would think treating the "cause" of his Tinnitus will result in better luck than trying to treat the Tinnitus itself. I have suffered with T 2 times in my life, once 12 years ago (it completely faded away in around 18 months) and a second bout for the last 10 months, and that has faded about 75% (praise the Lord) both times the cause was noise induced. I know how difficult this is on your son, only fellow Tinnitus sufferers can know how it affects your life. IMO your son needs to hear reassurance that it will get better and you won't stop until you find a solution to his neck injury. I truly believe he will get better in time.

I am really sorry that you have had tinnitus twice now, but very pleased to hear that it faded first time and is fading again. That's great news .

@brummygirl I answered your mail in conversation, but what I wrote you appears to be treatment that your son is already undertaking from reading your recent messages.

I would say that your son's problem is his neck. I sent you information about that. For you and others here, the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association has a data base of doctors. In using this data base try checking off qualification boxes and then try by not checking any boxes.

Some of these doctors work with somatic tinnitus patients who need specialized and carefully controlled treatment. I was reading the reviews of one doctor that is a member of NUCCA in my area and he had several somatic and subjective tinnitus patients getting great relief.

Thank you @Greg Sacramento I have looked at NUCCA for next. It is very good to hear of people with t getting relief from it. Unfortunately there are no practitioners very close by and travelling is a problem for our son. But I would like to go down that road.
I am also investigating pain clinics with an interest in neck and sport injury.
We just started using CBD oil too, just in case it can help the pain, tinnitus or anxiety. Ramping up currently to find a level that might help.
