Tinnitus Since
I was a small child
Cause of Tinnitus
Apparently a rare type of genetic hearing loss
Hello I'm Speersy and I have had tinnitus since I was a small child. I don't know what it is like not to hear ringing in my ears. Apparently I have a rare genetic type of hearing loss that my ENT specialist has not given me a name for but nothing can be done. I will eventually go profoundly deaf from this but think the tinnitus will remain. Each time I lose a bit more hearing my tinnitus gets louder so basically battling to verbally communicate with people as currently my tinnitus is very loud.

My ENT specialist had given me Prednisolone 25mg to take for 7 days when the ringing starts to become unbearable and negatively impacting on my work. I have been taking this on and off for other a year and I can only speak for myself, but have found some relief after the third day but everything goes back to normal a week or two after taking it.

I have tried everything from tinnitus relief therapy and meditation to herbal remedies and nothing seems to work. I am very interested to find what works for others.

Hi Speersy, I hope you will be able to counter the issues you are having. Maybe one approach would be to stop attempting to fight tinnitus head-on and just allow it to win. Humans are incredibly resilient in the face of adversity.

Hi MikeL1972,
I have also tried doing nothing about it for many years, with a Que Sera Sera attitude but there comes a time when desperation hits that you would nearly be tempted to try any remedy to lessen the negative social and work effects. I have even started learning sign language. Sometimes I am happy being blissfully ignorant of what is going on around me and but at work it is down right dangerous. So feel compelled to give most things a shot.

Hi Speersy, I'm also from Aus. This forum is fantastic with so much help and expertise. I've found it invaluable.

Good luck on your journey. Grant.

@Speersy Welcome to the forum, I'm also from Australia.
I can imagine things are very isolating for you if you are struggling to hear because of the tinnitus.
It may be that it's your hearing loss making it hard for you and due to the hearing loss, the tinnitus is loud.
Do you wear hearing aids at all? If you lose your hearing, would you be a candidate for a cochlear implant?

Hello fellow Aussies,
I did use hearing aids but have found with the decreasing hearing and increasing tinnitus that the aids don't have an adequate filtering system to cut out background noise. Therefore I am inundated with all noise along with tinnitus which is a complete sensory overload. So after trying to persevere for years, I finally put the aids back in their box.
Unfortunately I am not a candidate for a cochlear implant as my nerves are dying off and I believe that the implants receptor things attach to the nerve to bring in sound (my non educated understanding of the implant).
