How do I know which ear the sound is coming from? It *seems* to be in the back in the middle of my skull. Leaning toward the left side I suppose.

There's a roar/hum, deep-ish. That one I can't tell where it is coming from at all. It is like I'm immersed in the sound?

Then there's the high pitched tone I've had for several weeks now. If I don't think about it and turn to where I hear the sound, I "hear" it on my left. I think. LOL

If I get a sudden higher pitched sound, I can definitely tell where it is coming from because of the pain sensation. And, again, it is the left.

Is this how it is for others? Or is it supposed to be definitely one ear or the other? Can it be both ears?

(my GP and I are leaning toward a dx of Meniere's)

While a lot of of people experience tinnitus as coming from one or both of the ears, some of us also have 'head T'. I have an electrical hissing/sizzling in the back of my neck myself. I'm not sure that the 'location' of your tinnitus is indicative of anything. But I might be wrong.

Mine started loud and clear in the left ear and has fluctuated every day for the past 7 months. However, this week it seems to have moved to 'in my head' more centrally and now it permeates to the right as well but the loud screeching has eased off in my left ear. I'm a bit still in shock with it all and am stunned that the body can be so tortuous on itself!

I get that every once in awhile when I'm really hungry that sizzling noise in my neck. Is that the same sound around your referring about?

Yeah, it's as if someone is frying some chicken behind you.

Thats your nervous system buzzing! The central gain causing tinnitus allows you to pick up on those noises.

In low frequency tinnitus you can not detect from which ear the sound comes.

In high frequency tinnitus you can detect.

I got recently low frequency tinnitus and I can not detect from which ear comes but for high frequency I can detect that it is from left.

I get this sometimes too , I get T in my left ears. But when I am depressed I feel my entire head buzzing. What you mean by you pick up others noises . Don't happen a lot but do something.

I can absolutely tell that my T is coming from my left ear, and I can feel my eardrum tremble at times too. Although when the T is very loud such as during a spike I heart a zapping that seems to go back and forth to both ears. I imagine this is an illusion, but I can see how easy it would be to not know depending on your T.

I finally have an ENT appt for next week. They're about 45mins away but I can deal with that!

The ringing has been constant since it started. Except for lately. It started a few days ago. The tone gets very loud for a while then I suddenly could not hear anything as a very loud, higher pitched, painful sound hit me in the right ear. It lasted just short while, about a minute I guess. Just long enough to make me panic. When it was gone, the ringing returned.

So if that is the definition of "hearing the sound in just one ear", then no, I don't. It is a high pitched screech somewhere in my head, kinda sorta on the left, maybe, accompanied by a low roar.
