How Long Would It Take to Get Noise-Induced Tinnitus After a Loud Sound?

Instantly. The noise was high-pitched feedback coming through a speaker phone that was pressed to my ear (because I didn't know the phone was set to speaker phone). My ear started ringing instantly and never stopped.

All I know is I went in (hospital setting) without it and cane out with it. I had to be hospitalised for oxygen therapy. Didn't work!!
This was years ago, I have worse T now due to sertraline.
Not great and still struggling.

My noise event was 11-12 days before t started. I didn't correlate the 2 at first because the time was so long.

So, another question I have is can your own scream cause you to have damage to your ears and cause tinnitus?
I can't raise my voice too loud, one thing I do notice, I can't have a conversation with ppl who speak loud. Also I have to speak very low. This is what I get spikes from. I wonder if I am the only one like this sometimes. Don't know if it can cause damage, but try not to scream.

I was wondering because, I have super bad anxiety, two days before I got tinnitus I had a bad ocular migraine, it scared me so bad, if you have ever had one especially the first one it can be scary. I panicked and screamed as loud as I could for a few seconds, two days later I got tinnitus, I wondered if I caused damage to my own ears by screaming for those few seconds?

If its a noise induced you should do a audio test but I cannot believe that a own scream can do this. Maybe anxiety and stress?

Wish you fast recovery ❤

Thank you! I'm hoping one day it will go away. I did do a hearing test and my hearing was perfect said I could even hear whispers. I didn't think your own scream could do that. I was very stressed at the time, like a flight for life mode that day. Maybe stress triggered it, I've had it for 7 months, loud non stop hissing, ringing, humming. Some days are better than others but it's always there.

@CrystalB I doubt very much your screaming caused your T - more like the sympathetic part of your autonomic nervous system in full-on panic mode.

But for 7 months!? Do you suffer from bad anxiety every day ?

No, not immediately. It kind of grew on me. I was exposed to an extremely loud noise right in my ears! Earbuds...

First I had a static or hiss sound. Then it started to became more tonal. It has been changing in character, but I have had it ring, buzz and chirp. It's difficult to describe. It sort of has a life of it's own. But it became tonal about 6 months after the noise exposure. It's understandable. It takes time for the body to take care of the dead hair and nerve cells and form scar tissue, and of course for the brain plasticity to take place where the brain tries to reprogram itself and compensate for the loss.

The short answer is 6 months! At least in my case. The hiss sound didn't even register with me as tinnitus. But that thing came on probably a few weeks after the noise. It all came gradually and in episodes in my case.

My tinnitus was caused by a very loud, high-pitched, continuous squeal after the d***head working next to me made a mistake. I had my hands full at the time, the sound hit my ear square on, and after a few seconds I got a sharp pain in my right ear. I don't recall any hearing loss afterwards and my hearing is still fine now. The tinnitus didn't start that night. The hypercausis definately started around a week after. So yeah you can get severe T a while after noise exposure.

And no, you definately didn't get T from screaming. Sound waves go forward out your mouth, and your ears are at the side of your head, away from this sound wave. No one could scream loud enough to damage your ears.

What might have happened is that you already had your condition, and screaming made it worse as it builds up pressure inside the head and face. Just like when T is made worse due to crying, talking, yawning etc.

If tinnitus, or a new tinnitus sound begins days after a noise event.. isn't it already a little late to take Prednisone?
