As promised, some measures taken this year in various flights.
In dB(C) (to take the worst case) from my iPhone app.
BAE 146 / seat 7: AVG 86 dB / peak 91 dB
A319 / seat 8: AVG 81 dB / peak 87 dB
A321 / seat 14: AVG 81 dB / peak 89 dB
Embraer 190 / seat 1: AVG 79 dB / peak 86 dB
Embraer 190 / seat 21: AVG 84 dB / peak 92 dB
A320 / seat 3D (aisle): AVG 81 dB / peak 88 dB
A320 / seat 3A (window): AVG 86 dB
CRJ900 / seat 4A: AVG 79 dB / peak 83 dB
I have also flown other aircraft in the past like several times A380 but did not check the dB at that time. However It was very quiet except once where I had an exit seat.
My experience is:
- Take the seat to the front except for turboprop (with propellers) where you should go to the back
- Avoid exit rows which are much noisier
- Avoid window seats: 4-5 dB higher than aisle in the 3-3 configuration
