I Hate TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy)

Ok I'm late to this party but again ever since I joined I read about TRT and I thought this is good ill do this no problem. But after reading from this site It was only for the severe can do and since mine is moderate head T it was not meant for me. I was sad, but I keep it on mind, I kept seeing it on the site and read it was also expensive So expensive and my T was not high enough i went to plan B proceed to all the docs mention TRT to them guess what not a clue and not around my area. And they thought I was nuts. Now as far as habituate I believe I'm close, but with anxiety that's were you go down the rabbit hole and that what interfers with T those who have it attached. Yes we all hear it but we are in different boxes. I think it nice about TRT, But it really only fits Few and few can maybe afford it's like wanting that BMW. There is no cure nothing yet takes away this noise. I went for maskers and I had to beg for them which I got and my hearing person suggest signal notch therapy for which I wanted to know did anyone try based on tonal. But I can see how TRT is not available to most. So it hard to know if it works or not. What I really want is surgery to the back of my head pull out that noise, but again doc won't do that either.

@glynis I am not sure if you caught this, but I thought you might find it interesting. I recall on a different thread the question of whether using earbuds with white noise would be safe. It seems that it is because it is comparable to WSGs according to one of creators of TRT.

@lymebite thank you for sharing this!
My experience was comparable to that of @linearb.

I was treated with TRT under the care of Dr. Pawel Jastreboff, who is one of the creators of TRT. At the outset, he said he could treat me with TRT either with the wearable sound generators (WSGs) or without them, instead using my own earbuds and iPhone. He said progress likely would be faster with the WSGs, but either way was fine. He said that he priced the WSGs at his cost (about $1,600 for the pair), so financially he was indifferent to the two options.

Without commenting on any specific post in particular, I would just like to make a few anecdotal observations that might interest some of you...

Those who frequent some of the tinnitus boards will know that TSMB is the oldest still functioning tinnitus board (although it has little activity). Now, one of the long-time admins "over there" is called "stoianski". And those who know a little bit about TSMB and stoianski will be conscious of the fact that he (and TSMB) is a die-hard pro-TRT, anti-treatment forum - so don't go mentioning AM-101 on that board, in other words. Anyway... what's the point you might ask? Well, among the several thousand stoianski posts, he suddenly decided to spill the beans one fine day in 2017 (see attachment "TSMB_stoianski #3"). He writes in one post (in part): "...I feel terribly with my tinnitus and thinking more about my family and me". Why would he "be feeling terribly" when he year-after-year has been telling everyone that ever visits TSMB they will habituate to their tinnitus (see other screenshots for comparison)? Example of what he writes "Once you habituate you won't care on the fluctuation of the tinnitus..." (well, that turned out not to be... ahem... entirely true...).

Now the overall point of my message is that I could "live with" inconsistent statements coming from average arm-chair critic poster (that the Internet has so many of), but this is coming from the admin who has several thousand posts on how he "adores habituation strategies" (see the other sample excerpts I picked). Imagine someone being a newbie to tinnitus thinking that habituation (to any form of tinnitus) is possible, and then you come across the post where stoianski spills the beans, how would that make you feel? In a difficult situation, hope may be the best of things, but false hope is definitely some of the worst...

And as a side-note, I can mention that as Dr. Wilden was first on the list of places I ended up visiting, he has had many patients come see him after having tried TRT (which obviously didn't work - otherwise they wouldn't be in his office needless to say...).

So... perhaps some of the veteran TRT members should consider signing up as actors in the Emperor's New Clothes if the occasion ever presents itself. I think you would all make a fine contribution to that play in particular ("natural talent" as they say...).

Not sure about getting my clothes off ......lol:woot:

I think the TRT topic will always have members for or against it.
I think members whom have had the treatment can shed light on if it was helpful or not....
Love glynis x

The question of tax money supporting TRT (or other tinnitus therapy) has been mentioned. If most people with severe, disabling tinnitus can be helped by TRT to the extent of being able to return to work during or after their treatment, it has accomplished something very worthwhile, for those affected and society in general.

I really can't agree. Public funding should be going towards a cure, like in the Netherlands. I understand the desire of a "here and now" treatment, but research is the best way forward, and we need all engines on full thrust.

My experience:

TRT helped me tremendously

I was 60 days into a SHIT situation, and it turned around dramatically after I started receiving counseling and using the in-ear noise devices.

In one week, I went from using drugs like Xanax and Mirtazpine to sleep try to get through a fog horn night, to feeling like I had a chance to defeat this plague, and sleeping through the night drug free. After that, it was all solid improvement towards habituation. As others have said, the H was cured and gone.

The Jastreboff-Hazel book is a great resource.

I agree, practitioners are charging too much for WNGs. They should cost maybe $250 to $500. I bought a decent pair from the UK for about $900 US last year. That's the cheapest you can fine them retail.

Best regards,

Trebor

Hmmmm, your logic makes no sense. He's been at this for over 22+ years, I'm sure he has learned, gained experience and knowledge on the topic he is discussing. Listen to him and for once stop fighting advice that can possibly help you.

Simple as that, resisting so much is just not healthy.

BTW, Go eagles!!!!!

Even if Tinnitus Retraining Therapy doesn't work in the end, it provides great relief for me immediately. I am much happier with the white noise than the hissing in my ear that sometimes turns into a tone that rings throughout my head.

And I agree - hyperacusis is the worst. Well, actually maybe vertigo is worse. Not sure. I've had it all, and comparitively, I'll take tinnitus with sound generators anytime.

That's not what TRT is. It's a whole scam, not just WNGs.

@shantaya

TRT does work and I've had the treatment twice. If you are on this treatment or going to start it. I advise you not to discus it in this forum or any other as people will try to convince you that it doesn't work. This can delay or prevent you from making progress.

Above is just mikes way of saying "don't talk about it because people are just going to tell you it doesn't work". Those people would be correct.

If something works there wouldn't be a reason not to discuss it. Infact it would be encouraged.

Anyone that is suffering with severe tinnitus, needs calm and peace in their life and not negativity from people like @threefirefour and others. It is for this reason doctors and therapist tell their tinnitus patients to keep away from tinnitus forums, and I agree with this.

Well then why are you here?

I am a veteran and here to help people that are having difficulty coping with tinnitus. I have had this condition 22 years and habituated twice. There is absolutely nothing that you can do that can affect my tinnitus....:)
Yeah there is. By trying to show people in the tinnitus community that all our efforts NEED to go to finding a cure, I can relieve your tinnitus. But that's aside the point.

Again, if TRT works, why do it twice? it doesn't offer anything new.

Why are we all here? :hungry:

If you want to know the reason I had TRT twice, please go to my "started threads" and read my post: My experience with tinnitus, the answers are there...

People that are new to tinnitus are highly stressed and emotional. They need support and help not negativity which is what you and others like you promote here. It is for this reason it's vitally important they do not discuss any treatment they are having for tinnitus with people like you, until they have finished treatment. Hopefully by then they will have left tinnitus talk

I don't think telling them that TRT is a waste of money is spreading negativity.
