I Was Habituated — Nine Years Later, Tinnitus, Hyperacusis, Headaches and Ear Pain Are Back

Great to hear about your progression @aura! :) You've come a long way, and there is no reason why it shouldn't continue to get better over time.

In my opinion, there will always be a few days in between that will be heavier to deal with - and one might think sort of catastrophically "it's all coming back again" at that point. But normally it's a temporary, minor setback, and that's normal. I believe that's good to have in mind for the less good days.

As most of us know by now; having tinnitus and sound sensitivity in some degree is by no means linear in progression (for must of us) - and may be quite unpredictable at times.

Update:

Things are not going so well these days...

Last night, out of the blue, a new sound appeared in my " good ear".

It was pretty loud (I could hear it over the TV), different from the previous ones and lasted for about 2 hours.

I panicked big time, thinking that I would have to deal with it from now on.

The good news is that it faded away after all.
The bad news is that it could always come back and there is nothing I can do about it.

It was just a reminder about how unpredictable the whole situation is.

Plus, the hyperacusis is back and the old sounds are louder in the last few days.

I'll keep you updated.

Hang in there. I'm dealing with pretty much the same crap. I just want to drill these noises out my brain and zap them.

Hi @aura, I read your story, do you have pain hyperacusis these days, or just bad tinnitus?

I am from Romania too and I was wondering if you have found any good ENTs or audiologists who can help us with this disease. I have also pain hyperacusis.

Thanks.

Hey!

It's more like a painful discomfort.

I can't stand loud traffic sounds (I have to plug my ears when an ambulance passes by) and I feel a discomfort even when someone is talking next to me these days.
It also exacerbates my tinnitus.

My tinnitus isn't that bad (there are people here with debilitating tinnitus) but the hissing and high pitched sounds are very annoying.

I have the hissing high pitched noise right now when it spikes. Sucks bad.

So you're working your way to my level then...?

You really shouldn't dear :)

Hope it goes back to baseline!
Keep calm!

How's the foot...?
A friend of ours sneezed last night extremely loud :arghh: maybe this is what caused it...

This is the first day that I put my foot to the ground and tried to walk.

It hurts... it's going to be a long recovery...

So it's different than me. I have the classical burning pain hyperacusis which lasts for days/weeks especially if I wear earplugs (they irritate my ears a lot). I also have tinnitus, but it is mild, I can tolerate it, it's a piece of cake compared to the hyperacusis.

Hissing and high-pitched sounds are annoying for me (shower, sink water, plates, children screaming) and I cannot dream of going on noisy streets without my earmuffs, although I get pain from them.

Also my own voice hurts for at least a few hours, when I speak normally (like in Zoom meetings for my work).

Can you drive, can you fly?

My biggest concern is that I cannot travel anymore, which was a big part of my life.

I am from Bucharest, but I am willing to travel to other nearby city if there is a good doctor in any other city, or maybe have a Zoom meeting with him/her.

Regards,
Taw

Sorry... You should tell people to hold their stupid sneezes... More higiénico too... Careful with the foot then...

So have you tried seeing an ENT in Bucharest?

I send him to my guy in The Hague.

He can see 8 patients at once.

He give him good price.

Hi my favourite lady!

With the whoosh sound, can you stop it by pressing on the side of your neck, where you would normally take a pulse?

I have the whooshing sound, and it is stopped by light compression of the neck. I was wondering whether yours was the same.

Sorry you're struggling atm @aura. If we could travel, I would come visit you and cheer you up. I could do with some company too. I'm having a bad time with things. Health issues are literally the worst.

You have literally described my tinnitus. Apart from the last few weeks, I've had a new chirping sound added to the mix.

Another one? Damn that sucks. It sucks we have to just allow tinnitus do whatever it wants to.
I reckon I now have 5/6 different sounds. What about you? I try not to let it bother me, but since I've been ill, they haven't gotten louder, and of course, that gets me down a little bit. :(
