Just when I think I have habituated and I am experiencing all the same feelings towards my t as I did in the beginning. this came about as a result of nightshift. I definitely think there is a link between t and exhaustion. I am going to talk to my boss this week about avoiding nightshift. she aint gonna like that!

what do you all do when you feel so irritated by your t that you start imagining life without a head?

Sleep sleep sleep and start again. That's all we can do.

Why don't you come down South and we have vodka!
That will fix you:)

What part of the South you livin' in? Nothing but Bourbon here ☺

@SoulStation: yes im all set for an early night and no work tomorrow yay!

@ I who love music: im sorry you were affected by NS too. It just seems to wrong to be up at that hour!

@ Val: Id like nothing more than to revisit Adelaide and sip on vodkas with you Val..

I ended up hopping in the car and had a wander around a plant farm. Bumped into a former midwife, had a lovely natter in a picturesque garden café. Managed to not think about 'it' for an hour or so. Was nice! Back home again, sitting down and wham...there it goes again! :(

It's weird isn't @DebInAustralia? Had a holiday party for work last night and didn't hear it for 2 hours... Got in the car to come home and BAM there it was again.

Debinaustralia, what work do you do?
I find when I gave late nights and when insomnia hits my T is crazy too. Much on the forums on that.
Not been big on drinking in my life but have strongly considered it wondering if it would relax me.

Anything stressful makes T worse in that your perception of it is worse. The volume is the same but the relevance of it is increased. "Stress" from a cognitive stand point is actually information from your senses which has an emotional value linked to it.

The culprit is the limbic system of the brain who's programming consists of hardwired heuristics to protect your genes. For instance: fear protects you from danger, jealousy protects you from having your mate taken from you, love binds you to your partner till your children (genes) can flourish themselves etc

They're all time and tested strategies which helped your ancestors survive for the last half million years. As such your limbic system has fast track access to your senses and monitors your environment in the background for threats, they can be physical but also social ones too (getting thrown out of your tribe in the ancestral environment meant almost certain death) so it can trigger mediating emotions like guilt, shame etc to discourage you from actions which may put you in jeopardy.

The problem is that once an emotion is triggered then the limbic system takes a bigger % of your self of "I" and the incipient level of T you're experiencing in the background, which previously wasn't deemed important enough to forward to your conscious mind catches a lift on the stressful emotion you're experiencing and you're more aware of it.

In extreme situations your limbic centre can take 100% control of your conscious mind. Ever been driving and you've hit the brakes before a potential collision before you've even thought about it? That's known as an "amygdala hijack" ( the amygdala is a part of the limbic brain which deals with fear) it hijacks your conscious mind as it considers the danger to be too important to let your conscious mind deal with.

Psychopaths have a fault in their wiring which doesn't allow their limbic system to influence their conscious minds, so out of curiosity I'm wondering if they have problems with T?

The solution with T is to avoid all stressful situations and if they occur just don't care about them, look at the big picture instead, very little in today's work or social life is going to get you killed.

"I have had many worries in my life and some actually happened"

@Silvine
Yes, lots of references out there of t connected to the limbic system.
But don't think as yet there is evidence that the volume remains the same, but just its relevance increased as you have mentioned above. Fluctuations in volume may be different in different individuals. Could be a number of brain chemistry factors that is actually decreasing the volume/overfiring/nerve suppression etc.
It is still all yet a mystery.
What has seemed to work for many however is sleep - the big starting point for healing of the central nervous system.

The reason I'm mentioning it is somewhat anecdotal but it does tie in with my own research into a limbic relevance to T.

My tinnitus is only in one ear (the right one) and my other ear is fine. I can calibrate the actual level of my tinnitus by playing a tone of the same frequency to my good ear till it matches it's loudness, and both ears are in balance. It's level 37 on my volume slider.

After a recent health scare (testicular cancer) my T went through the roof, my thoughts at the time were it had reached at least 80 or 90 in loudness and I could hear it even in noisy environments.

So I went to re-calibrate it's loudness....I nearly fell off my seat: it was still 37. The next day I even drove home in my dinner hour (a 45 minute trip) to do it again; still 37.

Four days of this and 9 tests later 35 - 37.
Then I got my all clear from the docs and I didn't even think or notice tinnitus for a week, when I did notice it I tried again: 37 was the result.

Maybe you do get small fluctuations in loudness due to Potassium or Sodium levels in the blood but it's the caring about it which gets you anxious about it.

So glad I read this post. Only had T for two months and I can't even count the times I've wondered whether this might be the case with me but I felt I had no real way of knowing.

Hi paul...

Yes im a div1..

Midwife these days

Actually had an interview as clinic coordinator for a skin survelliance company..that will afford me *normal* hours...no night shift (yay) .. no weekend work....

Thanks for suggestion re dialysis..

Is this your field of interest?

It is now. I work in a quiet little 8 chair "satellite" unit in Atherton. Live 20 minutes away on acreage in Malanda. Previous 15 year career in ICU at Cairns Base. Morning sittings, with three evening sittings a week and late-earlys no problem as usually home by 8.30. Whatever set me off (probably my music side-job), night shift certainly didn't help matters.

My Boss there is deaf in one ear from a real live acoustic neuroma. Middle ear myoclonus on steroids from the way she describes it.
