Tinnitus Since
2010
Have been suffering from tinnitus since 2010. Some days are good -some are bad. I am on the process of changing my diet and exercise habits. I cook so my food is pretty healthy . My biggest obstacles are giving up coffee and wine. Does anyone have any key suggestions to kick off my lifestyle change? Really love my coffee;(

Hello Anne! Do you know what started your tinnitus? Maybe if you drink some coffee and wine every once in one while it is not so bad? If they make your T worse only for a while it probably isnt so bad. It is probably easier to habituate if you dont make too much changes? But it probably also depends how bad your T is and how much it intrudes with your life. In general I think a lot of vegetables and fruits and less fat and sugar is good but Ive heard that excess calcium could trigger it. Also, magnesium is improtant (leafy greens contain it for example). I myself have had T for 7 weeks - maybe some helpful tips from you? :)

Welcome to the forum Anne.

It's not necessary to give up coffee; well, you can try staying off it and see how it affects you, but see this:
http://psychcentral.com/lib/experts-challenge-caffeine-tinnitus-link/0002752

The team recruited 66 volunteers with tinnitus, who usually consumed at least 150mg of caffeine per day from tea or coffee. For 30 days, they were either given their usual caffeine consumption followed by phased withdrawal, or phased withdrawal followed by reintroduction then usual caffeine consumption.

"Caffeine had no effect on tinnitus severity," the researchers state. They report that the mean difference between caffeinated and decaffeinated days was less than half a per cent on the Tinnitus Severity index.

I don't believe little wine here or there hurts you either. But it's pretty much trial and error.

I suppose excess coffee is not anyway . there is no reason to create more problems for yourself. But you have to listen to your body - only she can tell you what to do.

My experience is very limited (>2 months). But still.
I try to keep away from coffee (for no obvious reason, though), and somehow I feel it's a good thing to do. Even if it just makes me think that I feel better, why not?
As to the vine - I enjoy a glass now and then, and contrary to what many people say, it's very good for me. Being slightly drunk makes my T subside a lot. But it's just me.

Regarding coffee, @Anne red, try this: Mix half decaf with caffeinated coffee when you make some. Most restaurants also will make you a half-and-half cup. You get half the caffeine and it can make a big difference. But like Markku says, there is some debate as to if coffee even really cause a T problem.

As for wine: It actually quiets my tinnitus if I am careful how much I drink.
Making too many diet changes, as Stina says, can actually be a stressor. I would concentrate on the exercise and just eating good healthy food -- which is a good idea even if you don't have tinnitus.

Welcome, Anne!

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I do drink tea. For a long time, I was drinking only decaf tea, because I was afraid it would make my tinnitus worse. But one day, I tried some regular iced tea at a restaurant and found that it didn't make any difference in my T. So, now, I drink a combination of both decaf and, sometimes, caffeinated. It has not affected my T at all.

For me, one glass of wine doesn't do anything to my tinnitus; in fact, it may improve it slightly.

You can try experimenting with coffee and wine, to see how it affects you. But, hopefully, you'll be all right drinking it in moderation!

Hello Anne, and welcome on the forum!
@Markku is right. After the onset, I kept away from coffee - later on I came back to my normal 2-3 daily espressos, without any side effect. I loved have a glass of red whine in the evening, it increases a little my T so I reduced.
As @Stina suggests, listen to your body. Do some tests, no way they can affect permanently your T!

I ate a bunch of chocolate over the holidays and I didn't notice any difference on days I ate it and days I didn't. I'm guessing coffee has more caffiene than chocolate. I don't know that for a fact though. I rarely drink soda and never drink coffee so I can't help you there.

Welcome Anne!!

I echo a lot of what has been said above. I kicked coffee and switched to tea, but as Markku said, caffeine has little to no affect on most types of T. If it brings you joy and fulfillment, have a cup of coffee!! I say the same on the vino, just enjoy in moderation. Living wit T takes a lot away from us, we need to enjoy what we can, when we can, as long as it's not destructive or counterproductive. All the best to you!!! :D

Alcohol lowers my t too, but i sometimes spike when it wears off!!

Yep, sometimes it works for me too but sometimes it seems to make things worse. And when it does make it better, it seems that later in the day when it wears off it becomes worse. I read a study that concludes that coffee has not ill effect on tinnitus but we still need to question.

I do better with coffee. I try to stick with organic, and it tast great.
I find that walking or running and listening to music with headphones at the same time is my absolute best remedy.
I came down with T. in 2010 and have been trying everything I can to be healed!
