Interesting Article About a Girl Who Had a Bead Stuck in Her Ear for 9 Years

Not sure if this has been posted before but it's pretty damning in this girls case. To think this was repeatedly missed is not a great endorsement for the Drs involved with her case. She showed signs of repeated discomfort and tinnitus.

I noticed at the end of the article it also says that ear syringing can be dangerous which is the first time I've seen that written in the general media.

Ed, I believe that this is very true. When I went to see the ENT specialist he told me that he would need to clear some wax out of my ears in order to get a clear image of the ears. I immediately asked him how he was going to do the removal and went on to explain that if it required a syringe procedure then I would have to decline.

He told me that in his practice using the syringe method of wax removal was not used and never would be. He cleaned my ears with a hand held instrument. I felt only a tickling sensation, no pain, no discomfort and no fear. I was one of the lucky ones I suppose, my experience with the ENT specialist was a positive one, in every way possible.

Yea, I totally agree that it's a bad way to clean the ears out. What I meant was that I've never seen this view in the mainstream media. It's always been a tinnitus sufferers opinion, but now it seems the tide is turning.

Wow, I know not all Dr's are bad, but my experience since I've had T has been less than good. This is why people get angry when you know something is wrong and they just usher you out the door. That poor girl could have had this all sorted and yet because the Dr chose not to do any further tests the little girl had to suffer. I hope her ears heal and the Ringing goes away.
I'm terrified if I have to get my ear syringed, I've heard way too many horror stories.

I think if I did need this to be done, I'll do the same as you and say I will decline if syringing is the only method they use. Glad you came out unscathed Emma.

My five year old grandson has said a few times he can hear a sound in both ears like a tick and flick sound.
I explained to him it was not normal to hear sounds in your ears and his reply was
"I hope I grow out of it"
He had a bead stuck in his ear for a few weeks till got admitted in to hospital to be put under to remove it.

Thanks, Jcb. I was nervous going into the appointment, especially after reading posts from others who had disappointing experiences with an ENT Specialist. If I had not joined this forum and became informed about wax removal I would probably not have voiced my opinion.

It was in the school nursery and she saw him put it in and could see it down his ear and tried get it out but it went deeper and AnE said it could not be got out with out putting him under.

Oh my, look at this adorable little boy. I am so very happy that it all turned out okay, Glynis. I have a family member who had to take her little guy to the ER to have a pebble removed from his nose. It had been there long enough to cause great distress and infection. She assumed it was a sinus issue.

I was only small when my sister put a marble in my mouth and said pretend it was a sweet and hit me on the back and I swollowed it..I had to have my motions checked in a potty till it came out...hahaha
