Levetiracetam (Keppra) Worked for My Hyperacusis

Kv3 modulators may help to restore the timing of firing of neurons in the auditory brainstem important for central auditory processing.

Just remember, keppra is a KV3.1 potassium channel modulators, which is the same target as Autifony's drug.

Some people say that reactive tinnitus is hyperacusis but I disagree.
A trial of 2 doesn't with good results does not mean it will be that way for everyone. Calling it a cure is a bit premature and may give people false hope even if the results are encouraging.
Dear Erik i full agree with you infact i was more and more caution and i never had gove advice about the levetiracetam, but now, after a long discussion with my neurologist who are testing together with an ENT this old molecule, he is inviting some people here in italy to try the levetiracetam and some people has just obtained some positive effects. When i had ask him "why you never try it?"...the answer was "sincere stupid": Because the levetiracetam is old..............

i also agree that the fact of 2 single positive experience don't is a clear-cut study but if there is a possibility on a million that an old and safety molecule should work on H disease.... the doctors could consider to try! It's not expensive, it's safety, it have a clear action on kv 3.1 ch, probably it would be worth a consideration. The doctors could try to make clinical trials more bigger than us... i hope!

Best Regards

Hello! I have had severe hyperacusis, fans would send my tinnitus crazy and trains etc...And everything was amplified, including tinnitus...However, since I used keppra it's totally disappeared as has Vikings. I strongly suggest using it, as it's quite safe, I've had no side-effects yet. Anyway, I reckon we should trial this like trobalt on hyperacusis! We should put this forward, as an actual cure for hyperacusis. Good luck people!
you try retigabine, you get cured
you try, cat's claw, you get cured
you try keppra, you get cured

if i sold you "Hoppra" and said it is effective (it's placebo), i'm sure you get cured

it make no sense everything cures you.....

I'm not cured, I have mild tinnitus now...Just saying this new drug is out sooner than Autifony's so may help people sooner.

Also, keppra was for the h, not the tinnitus and it did cure the h. Honestly, I don't get why you're getting so angry? Calm down, I don't mean to anger you.

For me, I refer to " reactive T" as noise that accompanies regular noise. Like a clock ticking you will also hear it louder and with a " beep" or high pitched sound attached to it.

I had it when my H began and in setbacks. In my opinion, reactive T, is a form of H.

I am not talking about tinnitus that reacts to exercise or food etc.. (I have that too)

Maybe keppra can help with the spikes...But I'm scared of green tea and chocolate ever since a massive spike...

Before Keppra alla sounds with an average between 20 and 40db made me crazy with painful headache. Now i can listen without problems all the sound and expecially my loved motorbike with Akrapovic exahust!
A quiet Room is about 30 db so and a whisper is 40 db. That means you were always in pain?

@Danny Boy wait some days before doing final conclusions because placebo effect can last some days.
Leviracetam is not KV3.1 has unknown mechanism of action..
To me if something works on H also works for T for example corticosteroids kill my H & T.
Retigabine improve my H & T but is slight improvement.
I have tried keppra only some pills but not difference i decided to stop it because there are many reports
that keppra induced T in some people.
Be careful ...

Keppra is acting on KV 3.1 though:

I agree with the rest you said but where are the reports about it inducing T? Could you at leasty provide sources for this?

If Keppra induced tinnitus i would not have ever used. There is no one leaflet that describe tinnitus as a side effects. This is strange. Where do you have seen this signalation?

You know the more and more that I read on these support sites about medications, I notice it about 50%, half of the people say that it makes their tinnitus and or their hyperacusis worse and the other half say that it makes it better ??? I saw that with prednisone steriods and now keppera. It's always the same, no one seem to agree, even on the side effects at time's.

Keppra seems quite safe, as I've had no side-effects and steroids can cause a heck of a lot of issues, so why not try keppra?

Danny

I don't have any problems trying the keppra as a matter of fact I have already put in a call into my doctor for him to prescribe it for me and I'm waiting for a call back. But I'm just wondering, what kind of issues are you talking about with the steroids ? I just took a 9 day course about a month ago with no problems. I had an acoustic trauma and it did helped me.

The interesting thing about all this is that, assuming you two had the same kind of hyperacusis symptoms, which likely indicates the same causes of your hyperacusis, then its conceivable that this condition (in your cases) is a form of central neuralgia/irritation (aka epilepsy). I still think that tinnitus and hyperacusis are two discreet entities that just happen to occur together (one causes the other), but actually originate via separate mechanisms and require different approaches to identification and treatment.

Well, I know steroids can cause diabetes.

Hey @quietatnight I was just wondering what was the acoustic trauma that caused you to get steroids(prednisone) prescribed?
Thanks

@Viking i also have severe H..it started in dec were i got exposed to a helicopter airlift while hiking...since then its been getting worse for months. i cant even go outside my house anything even a car passing and my T and H go haywire and ive been getting permanent spikes cause of it i hear everything even sounds outside from my room bug the shit out of me. and my T is just as worse it always changes in tones and is super loud..any door closing will set it off even if my shoulder pops. do you think that keppra would work on me i will cry if i can finally just walk outside and nothing sets it off..

Nobody can tell you it's gonna work for sure, but the chances of it working are in your favour. If you can get some, just do it...There's no point in living with h, when it could be possible cured.

Is anyone with hyperacusis gonna try keppra? We need more people to trial it, we need to see if this can help other people.

I have a doctors appointment next week with the soul intention of obtaining Keppra, as my Hyperacusis has reached chronic stage where with earplugs in I cringe even when I raise my own voice.

I have reached the desperate stage where I don't know how long I can go on like this!

Glad to hear! Just wanna hear people being cured, as I don't want people suffering when I know there's something out there which can potentially help.
