Cause of Tinnitus
Unknown
I've had tinnitus for 8 months now, don't know how I got it, it happened one morning, some things happened prior earlier before my tinnitus happened, I've been going in circles debating on what could had caused it! But it's a mystery that is unsolved. Anyways, I've been dignoised with ETD from a hearing test done back in December of last year, my ears most of the time feels full, and as well as constantly a high pitch hiss/ring/static I also have H! For some reason my ringing tends to get louder when my ears feel more open if that makes sense when they aren't as full. My tinnitus gets so loud most of the time I hear it over everything, and I can feel inflammation kinda in my ears it reminds me of when my nose gets worse with allergies. I can tell something just isn't right with my ears, they hurt when my ringing is so high pitch and loud, especially when I'm around other noises. Does anyone else have anything similar? I'm learning to live with this, but days are hard. I work so early in the morning and some nights it's hard to sleep, I've had this job for 11 years, my one and only job I've stuck with! I don't want to loose my job over this.

What you experience is very similar to mine ... except I don't have a feeling of "fullness."

I was blindsided by the appearance of T. I estimate it to be about 12-13 khz, appeared out of nowhere. I wasn't sure what it was initially... but it kept louder over the first 3-4 days to something I can longer ignore - T.

T for me typically is super loud. I can hear it over shower, garden mowers, subways in subway stations, parking lot next to jets taking off.

One "secret" I will share with you. I am pretty sure T silences when we sleep. There are many times when I am suddenly jolted awaken, for example, and I'd notice silence ... and an eeee coming back only a few seconds later.

Also, in the beginning when I was paranoid about never being able to sleep, I would do breathing exercises while I lying there listening to my absurdly loud T. A few times though as I doze off but still conscious, I could feel myself turn my T down ... never quite off ... but to something that is like a .1 out of 10. If I could meditate better, I am sure I could make it a 0.

I have heard from many others here similar experiences - that their T silences when they sleep.

Hopefully that knowledge will help calm you down when you most need it ... and get the sleep you need. Sleeping with T is ok ... because you are on your way to silence.

Hopefully over time, our body - to the extent our bodies can - with good sleep will rejuvenate and make the T much much more bearable...

Hugs,

Allen

Hello @CrystalB. Everyone's tinnitus is different. I have a friend with H and my heart goes out to you. I do not have that and from what she has said, it can be very difficult.

A lot of the time, the cause of someone's tinnitus is never known. You have probably seen posts from some of us who have had tinnitus for as long as they can remember. The "fullness' as you refer to is is fairly common as I have seen multiple posts here with people mentioning similar symptoms.

There may be some good news. As your tinnitus is fairly new, you have a chance of recovery. @Bill Bauer wrote the following post discussing studies that show a fairly high recovery rate from tinnitus:
https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/spontaneous-recovery-stats-over-70-recover-3-studies.21441/

Also, as you may have already gathered from reading this forum, many people do get better within a couple years. So hold on to hope.

If you have not yet, may I recommend seeking out posts by @Michael Leigh. He has written a number of posts that I believe may be applicable to your situation:

https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/answers-to-hyperacusis-and-habituation.12058/

Another point I would like to make is the importance of maintaining a positive attitude.

@billie48 wrote his success story demonstrating how positivity helped him habituate.
https://www.tinnitustalk.com/thread...w-i-recovered-from-tinnitus-hyperacusis.3148/

Michael Leigh wrote the following, excellent post on the importance of positivity: https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/is-positivity-important.23150/
and the following on negativity and tinnitus
https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/tinnitus-and-the-negative-mindset.23705/

Have you considered a sound machine? Many here have had success with their use helping them to sleep. There are also apps available for phones that produce a variety of white, pink, or brown noise that may help mask your tinnitus.

May I ask what it is that you do for a living? Is it possible to wear hearing protection to help with your H? Most good companies will try to be accommodating to the medical needs of their employees.

I hope that you find some help here. Please keep us updated on your progress. I hope that you recover, or at least habituate soon.

I'm not an expert and don't want to give false hopes, but regarding H, I think this is something that will disappear. Stress and anxiety causes it and feeds off it. Try to settle down (I know easier said than done) and with time I think your H will reduce or disappear completely, and hopefully your T as well.

@CrystalB although I dont have H, I do have vibration sensation with my ringing ear. The vibration sensation increases with certain types of low volume fan, AC and even low volume TV, and it literally hurts due to the straining sensation. Wearing earplugs at work help, cutting down on work also help, if that's an option for you.

I get occasional bouts of h, always in my right ear (surprisingly because my hiss is in my left). The good news is, it most likely will go away with time. Be ez on your ears, take antioxidants(I take nac daily) and just give it time. You'll be fine

I have pretty severe T and sleep came back after my year mark. Try some hibiscus tea to help you sleep. Even when nothing else worked for me when I drank that in 30 min I'd be knocked out.

Hmmmmmm. Maybe you should try to treat the inflammation in your ear? Has the doctor put you on any pills or sprays for it?

Try some hibiscus tea to help you sleep.

Hi @Shera,

Thanks for the suggestion about hibiscus tea. I recently discovered that drinking POPPY SEED TEA has enough of a gentle sedating effect on me that drinking it helps me relax and sleep. It's even helpful if I drink it before driving. -- (Of all things!)

That's another good one. Though some, like me, have to be cautious. Poppy seed tea makes me sick. Don't know why.
