Cause of Tinnitus
TMJ disorder, airplane barotrauma, noise exposure.
I use Gabapentin +Clonazepam+ Nortriptylene & also Zolpidem for sleep. I get pretty good results with them with minimal side effects, at least for me. I sent my SoundCure back & will use a ipod & mp3 player instead. The SoundCure actually seemed to make my headnoise worse at times.

I was just curious what others use to control or reduce their tinnitus, especially when it spikes on them, medications or otherwise.

I use no meds any longer. I never found anything to really help with T, medication or supplements. When I had bad anxiety several months back because of T, I sometimes took Xanax or Ativan and that helped. When I have a spike like I do today, where it is noticeably loud, I remember that I just had 2 days in a row of very low T so I know I will have more if I can make it through the bad day(s).

Like the Columbo avatar.

I tried the SoundCure and it did nothing for me.

I listen to white noise from a cd my otoneurologist gave me.

Grant1, I am glad you returned your SoundCure, the name sounded too good to be true. Have you tried a MP3 player for white noise & nature sounds etc. ?

I'm spiking too Erik. I keep saying to myself that it will change & go down again - so easy to think that it won't though! 'Keep calm & carry on'... I'm going to hang a sign on my wall :)

No drugs, no meds, no herbal sleeping remedies. When I can't sleep (like last night) even though surrounded by rain & purple noise etc., I get up and do something instead. So at 3am I was writing code in the middle of an artificial rainstorm with one eye open & feeling like I'd fall asleep on the keyboard. Ahh well... it'll go down again soon or I'll go insane... hopefully the former will happen first.

My mother was a believer in Christian Science. One of the things she said often to her five kids, family, and friends, was to "live in the now". When I was younger, I never understood what she meant. As I have grown older, I have come to understand what she meant, and T has helped to reinforce what she tried to communicate. You are helping to reinforce that too, that we can get through the "now" with hopes of quieter times maybe a few minutes from now. Hope you are having a quieter day!

I'm spiking too Erik.

There must be something going on in the cosmos, because my T is as an all time worse and has been for 3 days. I stopped Xanax last week, and I loathe to say that has anything to do with it, except that maybe its a final withdrawal symptom. I hope so, and hope it goes away soon.

Keep the faith Mick. Most of us go through up and down periods where it seems very tolerable to spikeville. Sometimes when coming off a regular med you can get a temp spike.

I've not tried an MP3 player.
The SoundCure almost seemed to make my headnoise worse also. I think setting 3 was white noise and itwas the one I preferred.
I think in the next ten years, there will be significant progress on sound therapy for tinnitus.

Same with me, the #3 & #4 were pretty much white noise. I bought a preloaded mp3 player at a tinnitus clinic. It was marked up a lot because it was loaded with 5-6 white noise, many nature sounds, and all kinds of other music. I sort of had hard time navigating it though. I just recently bought a IPOD classic and am loading some of the music artist's songs that I like & will later load white noise & nature etc. I had to call Apple because I hit snags in the process of downloading & syncing. You can buy cheaper Samsung mp3 players also. They are nice & compact vs a CD player. If you need any recommendations or help with this let me know.

How long did you have your SoundCure before returning it? I had mine 3 months. Did you get my PM?

I hope ur better. Yesterday night ws d same for Me I woke up with electrical circuits firing in my ears.....was very very hard..... after that point I kept saying to my self ..... I have tinnitus but the tinnitus will never have me....hang in there brother....I hope you are better tday. .....tday I also amped up d white noise....tht helped a bit too.......

Me too....I try not to take drugs but sometimes a good drug is levo cetrizime....basically for allergy but does not harm or has any habit forming or other adverse.g. reactions....it's mild compared to the others....

My doctor started me on topamax , I'm at the END of my rope . I just want to know if anyone's had ant luck with this or anything else . Please give me some answers you can email me at mikebrakebill@live.com thanks . I gettin tired and runnin out of will .....

Hi Mike:

Hang in there and don't lose hope! Listen to your doctor and give the Topamax a try (and please tell us how it goes). A friend of mine has had some luck with a drug called Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine). So, you might want to mention this to your doctor.

Another interesting possibility, assuming you and your doctor are willing to try, is the mixture of Neurontin (Gabapentin) and Klonopin (Clonazepam). Many people have reported that this cocktail works. My understanding is that the Neurontin somehow potentiates the effects of the Klonopin.

Finally, if currently available drugs aren't doing anything for you, there are other options, such as TRT, which many people swear by.

Thank you for your reply , I'm in the middle of something that is not of this world . I can find no relief whatsoever and the topamax also is making me an a$$hole to everyone I love . If there was just some sighs of hope but all I keep hearing is this new grant and that new cocktail and I get it , it takes time but I need help NOW !!!!! I'm losing my mind NOW !!!

Thank you, I'm not doing well and I don't know what to do. I've never felt this low ever. I can't take 30 more years of this.

Yeah, Mike...exactly how I feel.:(

I have been at this place before but I got through it somehow.

Beer is the only thing that works for me, will not take any drugs ...absolutely not. So yeah...Beer.

Only thing I can say to cheer you up is that I have two friends that have dealt with this, one of them has habituated and it does not bother him at all anymore...it took time though. My other friend started having short breaks of 15 min or so until it finally went away altogether. Took him 2 years.

I forgot to take my Zolpidem (Ambien) last night and I am paying for it today.....very loud hissing. Sleep must be a factor for me. Drinking Dr. Pepper was probably bad also.....I never learn.:( I ate Gralise 1200mg + Clonazepam .5mg to combat the T-Monster.:)

I just came off of 3 days in a row of the lowest T I have had in the past 15 months....very nice and barely noticeable. It's up a bit today but not bad.....

@erik
I hope that it disappears and leaves you completely.

If you dont mind me asking..what kind of T you have...i know it sucks to have to describe it...but ould be great to compare

Cheers

Well, it's much louder today, I guess my brief break is over but it was great for 3-4 days. Not sure why it was so low. I didn't do anything different than normal, still drank coffee, diet was the same, etc. @Dhaval, not sure exactly what kind of T I have. All my audiograms, including the high frequency test were normal and hearing is not an issue for me, though it is possible I may have some slight hearing loss in the very high frequency (not testable) range.

At this stage in my T, even though it is much louder than it was for the past few days, it doesn't bother me that much, mostly just annoys me. I do have solace knowing that if it can be that low even for a few days, then there must be some mechanism that can potentially keep it that low all the time or get rid of it completely.

T is definitely a mystery in many ways and even more of a mystery is how it can be so similar for all of us, yet so different in many ways too.

Me, too! There must be something in the atmosphere causing our tinnitus to get worse. We're having lots and lots of rain here; I wonder if it has anything to do with barometric pressure?

Anyway, at times like this, what works best for me is distraction, a calm atmosphere and attitude, and white noise (water sounds work for me) in the background!

That wouldn't surprise me!! Hope you have a better T day tomorrow, Erik.
