Well, I suppose if you are living in "good ol' Brighton" with an overview of the sea, then due to empirical observations of nature, and basing one's belief system on that alone, could lead someone to assume the Earth is flat...

I just remembered a manga (Uzumaki by Junji Ito) I started a long time ago about people who get especially crazy with spirals, anything that contains spirals. At one point a woman is hospitalized and when she finds out that the cochlea is in the form of a spiral, she literally stabs her ear.

Tinnitus is caused by the spirals confirmed.
