What causes integrated neuronal activity to turn non-subjectivity into subjectivity?

Science doesn't have a freakin clue how subjectivity emerges from neuronal activity, let alone how an organism would have the ability to control it's own thoughts and behavior.

Philosophy of consciousness

-

This thread has turned into a place for julian to post special needs art and for me to speculate about conscious quackery. We have failed as MPP'ers.

I share your disgust with the idea that we all have the opportunity to "just do nothing but study for a few years"
My family came to North America with no funds/savings, no personal connections with anyone here, and, with my mom being the exception, no English. Two years after our arrival my dad was diagnosed with brain cancer. He passed away 5 years later when I was in the midst of doing nothing but studying for a few years. One can always borrow the money to finance one's education.

As for the studying resulting in a lucrative career, that has been been the case for literally everyone I know (well).
we live in a meritocracy and the plight of the poor is their own fault
One needs more than hard work to be earning the "private island/jet" money, but don't tell me that it's challenging to join the middle/upper middle class.
That study doesn't prove what you seem to think it proves. Perhaps you will see that after giving it some thought. One question you might ask yourself is what else could be causing these results besides US supposedly not being a meritocracy. That's all I will be saying about that.

Anyone whos taken a science course on colors, sounds, smells and taste knows they don't exist externally. They only exist present to a conscious agent.

Smells and taste are chemicals interpreted by the brain.

Sound is waves of air, water, or whatever that is interpreted by the brain

Colors don't exist in the external world, they are just shades of light interpreted by the brain.

An ice cube has no sensation of cold A hot stove has no sensation of noxious stimuli until interpreted by the brain

A thought experiment should be, what if the brain choose to interpret sound as color, or smell as sound? Or hot as cold? It could have... Evolution could have shaped us that way. Everything we know about the universe relies on conscious brains to have logic. Interpret this as you will, but it's true. We could have evolved completely different senses like a bat uses sound to locate objects.

A billion years of the correct sperm traveling to the correct egg or else different particles would have lead to a successful lineage where I never existed.

I may be the biggest loser on the planet but I exist against virtually impossible odds

It doesn't matter if idealism is true or not, it's a good thought experiment. Unlike "brain in a vat or solphism" it can be mathematically precise. So we can test why it's wrong.

I wrote a rap about tinnitus, it goes like this

It seems to be coming to the point at which I'll break
I don't know how much more of this my puny mind can take
There couldn't be more at stake, this is my life for goodness sake
Stepping blind, whack my face with rake after rake.

I got problems, problems of the ear kind
Not an easy task to get this type of thing off my mind
That's right I'm in a bind, there's no solution I can find
My mood is not a toy that you can wind and wind.

I have a limit, but it keeps on getting higher
One more complication and I'll have to mask it with a blow dryer
Building a pyre, Call the town crier
We're gonna burn the doctor, he's a motherfucking liar.

I'm sick of hearing high pitch squeeling
Precious silence, it is stealing
Fucking jaded, how I'm feeling

Fuck it, I'm gonna turn up the white noise.
I'm a playa da games witha da boys.

Thanks

Penn is wrong this time, because many of the founders of quantum mechanics took the consciousness hypothesis seriously.

It's already been proven that photosynthesis and DNA mutations make use of quantum mechanics and without that life would not exist. However a toaster can make use of quantum mechanics and no one considers that mystical. However I suppose that's because it's man made.

There is still no proof consciousness relies on quantum mechanics :(

Plants appeared 1 billion years ago.

Animals appeared 550-620 million years ago.

It is argued on and off that plants have a form of awarenes. If plants are conscious, that would suggest the common ancestor of both animals and plants has primal form of conscious awareness as well.

20th century science did not take the study of consciousness seriously and why it evolved in the first place, it seems to go back WAY back before animals and even plants. Subjective experience goes way back, but scientist are still debating this topic, it is not proven that plants do have awareness. I'm hoping they do but I could be wrong.

Long before I gave a darn about the mystery of consciousness I remember watching science documentaries about botanist arguing if plants did have awareness. This is a hotly debated topic amognst them.

Deepak Chopra calls Sam Harris a Jihadist.

9:05-9:35 Sam Harris admits science can't yet explain subjectivity of consciousness.

Psychologist/behaviorist probably did hold back research on consciousness 50 years, However there's nothing supernatural about that considering they did the same shit for tinnitus and probably every other disease/biological topic.. We don't consider research on tinnitus to be mystical even though it got held back by them.

I think one of the reasons scientologists are so successful at recruiting people (though they are widely known as being a wacky cult) is because they use the fact that so many people have been hurt by psychiatrists as an "in" to talk about their world view.

I was on vacation about a decade ago and saw a pop up "museum" dedicated to the ways the field of psychiatry often hurt people more than it helped going all the way back to the inhumane asylums of the past. It was run by scientologists which we found out pretty quickly but there was something that rang true with many of their points even if they were using the ideas to promote their snake oil religion that would "end people's suffering."

MPP does not endorse scientology. Scientiologists are disturbing to say the least. I remember once I watched documentaries on their history.

My life is crumbling at the moment, but I'll be around. Just have to paste the pieces back into a mosaic or something lol
we are suppose to give up, fighting is an illusion. You can't win against impossible odds.
