N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)

I didn't really mean in relation to tinnitus, but side effects in general.

If you place - is Rosuvastatin or Crestor dangerous - into an internet search - a lot of discussion comes up.

I didn't want to answer your question in discussion above by saying, not to use this drug, so I said - I would do what your doing. Your doing some really good stuff.

This is enough to put me off:

"In summary, rosuvastatin has no proven health benefit as discussed above, it can cause potentially serious kidney toxicity that is not seen with the other statins, it is the only statin that caused rhabdomyolysis, a life-threatening adverse drug reaction, in pre-approval clinical trials, and there are already three ."

I shall proceed as I am just losing weight, eating healthier and doing lots of exercise.

Labels say take (1) tablet daily, preferably with a meal.
So? Karen... is that you? Just kidding, I like those memes.

:)

I know you are being helpful, excuse my joke.

My turmeric says one capsule too... and people are taking 5-7 times that amount... many threads on here discuss taking more. I found this.... "There is no recommended daily allowance for NAC, because unlike vitamins, it's not an essential nutrient. The dosage used to prevent radio contrast dye damage is 600 mg to 1200 mg every 12 hours for 48 hours."

Having had severe tinnitus with no resolution, you try different stuff... but I draw the line at mood/mind altering meds... but that is just me. :)

Given its complicated regime, NAC has a high potential for iatrogenic errors, including overdose.[15] A 23-year-old female developed hemolysis, thrombocytopenia, metabolic acidosis and acute renal failure after NAC overdose. She erroneously received 100 gm instead of 10 gm of NAC. She then required daily hemodialysis but eventually died after developing hemolytic uremic syndrome.[16] Another case report describes a 20-year-old female, who developed hemolysis and elevated serum bilirubin. She improved with supportive measures, and her liver function tests and anemia improved within a few days.[17] Massive accidental NAC administration in the order of 100 mg/kg/hr had resulted in cerebral edema, seizures, uncal herniation and permanent brain injury in another patient with APAP overdose.[18]

This article discusses NAC for Toxicity - Emergency ER procedure guidelines for using NAC for toxicity go back decades. NAC is being used for more toxic indications now within large trauma ERs in the USA.

Did anyone who have taken NAC experience runny nose (like allergies)? It's so weird. I thought it was my allergies acting up but the runny nose only happens from 10 minutes after taking the NAC pill that lasts one or two hours. My normal allergies happen throughout the whole day, not just an hour or two. Also, tinnitus seems to have spiked a little.

Have you continued taking NAC? Has there been any noticeable change in your tinnitus at all?

What do people think about taking
glucoraphanin+myrosinase supplements, this then increases sulforaphane concentrations in the body, which activates NRF2 which then increases NAC production?

Also just a comment, I find taking smaller doses of NAC more often during the day, e.g. during meals, is better than taking one large dose once a day.

This less likely causes side effects like an upset stomach, and is more therapeutic as it more consistently remains in the bloodstream.

Thoughts?

I've been taking NAC 600mg a day since April 2020, and for me it definitely reduces my tinnitus.

Stopping it even for a few days, my tinnitus becomes much more noticeable.

I've taken a plethora of vitamins/supplements, and NAC is the only one which does anything for me.

We're all so different.

Do you take it in the morning or at night? I think it might give me spikes but I'm not sure.

I am finding some days are better than others, but my tinnitus is slowly improving and NAC could be one thing assisting in this. But I do caution against taking too much of it because I broke out in a chicken-pox like rash because I took too much.

How much was too much for you?

I saw in another post that NAC was giving you chest/back pain. Is that still the case?

In the last 4 days I doubled my NAC dose to 1200 mg per day & my tinnitus is at the lowest its ever been.

Yesterday I didn't take the tablet until 1 p.m. so later than my usual in the morning and and I'm quite sure that my tinnitus increased slightly.

I've come here to share my experience with NAC. Overall I've been experiencing a very slow downward trend where the volume decreases slightly about every 6 weeks. So it's possible that my volume was going to decrease anyway.

But I do think that NAC is making a difference. Potentially as mine was closed by antidepressants -- supposedly this helps the neurotransmitters balance. I've ordered a bottle of 120 so let's see

Did you notice any benefit while taking the original 600 mg dosage? Also, did the effect on your tinnitus happen instantly or did it take some time? Asking because I'm up to day 3 on 600 mg and haven't really noticed any change so far.

Hi there, best thing is to read through my own thread. I've posted regular updates from when I first got tinnitus. Because my volume has steadily slowly declined over time it's hard to be objective. But there is a good chance that when I doubled my dose that's when I saw marked results. On 600 mg along with the other supplements I was taking I don't think there was an impact. Especially as I would forget to take my supplements sometimes for days at a time.

But when I doubled the NAC dose I noticed quietening. In fact the reason I logged on today was to post another update; the volume has slightly reduced again.

It's supposed to regulate levels of Glutamate which should decrease tinnitus, but it spikes me, not sure why...

Why not just take Sulforaphane or NAC directly?

Hi Steph, did you decide to try NAC by yourself or was it prescribed by your doctor? Which specific brand are you taking?

Hi Juan.

No advice from doctor. I just decided to take it myself.

The brand I buy is from a store in England called Holland & Barrett.

Steph

So from what I read, this seems to be the most consistently effective supplement. I'm giving 1200 mg a day a shot for my hyperacusis, hopefully this will decrease the intensity of spikes and setbacks.

Why not just take Sulforaphane or NAC directly?

Sulforaphane degrades very quickly.

Our bodies produce and regulate NAC, Sulforaphane apparently increases production.

However I now don't think it's worth doing, just a small amount of NAC is enough.

What's the best dosage of NAC for acoustic trauma?

I have 600mg NAC capsules. Should I take two, despite the bottle saying to take one? Is it worth going up to 1000mg capsules?
