Tinnitus Since
December 2017
Cause of Tinnitus
possible TMJ, came on after severe cold and chest infection,
Hi everybody.
I had a bad cold and chesty cough around Christmas 2017, while I was in the shower my left ear popped and I went dizzy for a while. I also had a ear ache befor that and a pain on the left side of my jaw.

Around the 27th I noticed this ringing in my left ear, it's made me so noxious since then. I've noticed that when I yawn or put pressure on my jaw the ringing goes louder. The last week I don't seem to notice the ringing as much until I go to bed and it's not pleasant, I've tried to mask it but it still wakes me up a few times in the night.

I've been to see the doctor 3 times and been given antibiotics, the doctor says it'll clear up as I'm still a bit bunged up and my ears keep popping and crackling when I swallow. I've asked to be referred to ENT but she has refused as she says they won't be able to do anything.

I also hear what sounds like my heartbeat in my ear every now and again.

My ear spikes a little in my opposite ear every now and again and it makes me so anxious and nervous, since this has started I've barley had a appetite and even though the sound seems to have lowered the last week (not sure if I'm getting used to it) it spikes in my other ear and it makes me feel sick.

I'd appreciate any advice as I've read some horror stories on varies sites.

There's fluid still in your ears, probably congesting your hearing and causing tinnitus. Consider taking some pseudefed and flonase to help get rid of it.

Thank you, I will try them if it will help, I'm just confused as to why the ringing goes louder when I put pressure on my jaw or yawn.

That means it's somasensory. Some tinnitus naturally does that when you apply pressure to areas like the jaw or neck. The good news is that it's much more treatable, so on the unlikely chance that your tinnitus stays, there will be a treatment for this tinnitus in the near future.

I hope it does go it's making me feel so anxious. Should I go the dentist or just see if it goes by itself?
Thank you again for replying.

For now just wait it out. If it's still there in a few months then visit an ENT, or a dentist if you suspect your tinnitus is TMJ related.

I'll try and do that. The doctor did say my ears could take a while to clear up, but again I've read so many horror stories that I'm terrified of it being permanent.

Coming from someone who's tinnitus is permanent, life does go on. I truly hope that yours isn't permanent, but even if it is, you can lead a normal and happy life. In the meantime, try not to focus on the negative and stay away from the "bad experience" stories online. Stress and anxiety will only make it worse. Keep your head up and stay positive! :)

Thank you, I'm going to try and stay positive. I'm just getting anxious all the time. Thanks for the positive reply Ben. I'm going to make an appointment with the dentist to see if they can do anything and I'm praying it's not permanent.
