Hello, all,

I'm pretty new to this whole deal and have been lurking since the weekend. I woke up last Thursday with my ears ringing after a rough night of sleep. Figured it would go away, but it hasn't.

I feel silly posting for having dealt with this less than a week.

I saw the ENT this morning and had some conductive hearing loss (but the one testing bone was better). He suspects perhaps a virus and put me on prednisone for 10 days.

Hoping to find some support, encouragement, and most of all a bit of hope that maybe I'll get some relief from this. As well as getting to know meet some folks and be reassured that this isn't that rare of a situation .

Anyway, that's the short of it!

High pitched.

Sometimes it feels like it's in one ear. Sometimes the other. Sometimes my head.

When I'm active and busy I don't notice it as much... but in the car or at night it's all I can can hear. I can hear it at times during conversations and when watching TV, but it's easier to ignore.

I'm not Contrast or Bill Bauer, but just take that prednisone and while it's potentially not JUST from hearing loss just keep your ears safe and be mindful, because even if it's viral or an infection and a new hearing loss, they're still sensitive and bared raw in a way they usually wouldn't be. So wear some ear plugs if things tend to get loud and be cautious. If you're going to be around your kid, judging by the photo, wear ear plugs so you don't suffer from spontaneous scream. Tell your family what you're going through and for some consideration, so your journey to healing can be a quick one and the fading starts happening soon. You're very fresh, I would expect it not to die down within the first two weeks, but who knows? Ear plugs for vacuum, for blender, garbage disposal, when you're out at the store or anything of the like. But don't overprotect. It will be alright, just try to remain calm and not focus on it despite it being very hard not to, okay? You already did a good thing by visiting the ENT and getting Prednisone. I feel like you're on the potential right track to a hopefully smooth recovery.

Thank you. I am hoping I will see some improvement, but looking through the forum hope seems pretty slim. Do people ever just "disappear" from the forum without sharing their success?

I'm trying to stay calm, which when around family and friends seems easy... but at night it's brutally hard.

Yeah. That's what I think. I've seen success stories of people where they just make their success story and blip off, gone for good. I see people who make accounts one day and never come back on. I'm sure there are a handful of people who have had their T resolved and gone away and just want to be done with it, or get nerves and never want to think about it again, because anxiety and the fear of it which is why I think the success stories are so small and hard to come across. So, don't let that be THE measurement for you. I don't know if you can take magnesium while on prednisone or if there's any interaction? <-- Ask around. But if you can, I would say buy some magnesium because it has been working for me very decently.

I have been taking magnesium for some time now, and mentioned it to my ENT. He didn't say to stop so I'll keep taking it in the meantime.

@GSC - Thank you for taking the time to reach out. This feels very lonely right now. People don't understand how annoying it is.

Of course. It's very isolating at first to have this happen to you. You're not alone though, and the possible guarantee is that it will get better and fade if you protect yourself and such. Just remember ear plugs, look into the conductive hearing loss on here and see what can be done about it. Don't have unnecessary tests subjected onto you in your very new onset. At the end of the day, there is no cure, but time does in fact heal everything to a degree. Hang onto that. :huganimation:

Hello !

Why do you feel silly ???

You did well coming here and sharing your feelings about Tinnitus !

It is very important to feel not completely lonely with this trouble ! Even though we are alone with it because this is deep inside our head... But still it is good to share with other T sufferers !

Let us know if the medication will help ! :)

All the Best !

Felt funny since I see so many others who've dealt with this for years, I felt a bit like a complainer, to be honest.

A few days vs. a few years... but I convinced myself the sooner I start to face it that I could start to deal with it on real terms.

Thank you for the kind welcome!

You have come to the right place for information and support.

You have good chances of getting better IF you start to take care of your ears and dont abuse/hurt them for a while.
Are you having other symptoms other than the ringing??
Stay positive. I hope you feel better soon. :)

Once

So your ear infection is just the middle ear? Once it goes away and if it doesn't reach the inner ear your tinnitus should fade a few weeks after the hearing defecit resolves.

However if it does reach the inner ear it will cause some permanent damage meaning permanent tinnitus.

A friend of mine had an inner ear infection where the tinnitus went away after 6 weeks or so.

Welcome to the forum OP. Hopefully your T goes away after the infection and you never have to deal with us again. Jelly you got prednisone.

Why do you need to see an audiologist, they don't check for hearing loss correctly?

All you need is a predisone and magnesium while letting your ears rest.

So far I've noticed the sound has changed. Less "EEEEEEEEE" and more almost metal on metal grinding. Not sure if that's good or just normal progression. Had me up from about 2:30 to 5:00 this AM.

You really should not be ashamed of posting here, this is exactly the place where you must take out what you have inside, your pain and suffer !

And BTW, we all came here as new member once ! ;)

Did you try to put some relaxing music or rain sounds for the nights ?

At the beginning of my T, I used to do that and it helped me !

The one I got only cost about $25 on Amazon and plays a ton of sounds. I have a rain sound that's pretty good and a few that sound like the a/c that I like so far. I haven't been able to detect a "loop" in them yet either, so that's a bonus.

Never tried these noise machines who play rain sound...

Is this easy to buy on Amazon ?
What I do for listening to pleasant sounds is you can go on iTunes or something similar and just do a search for "nature sounds" to download. There's every kind of nature sound recorded for you to download like ocean waves, rain, waterfall etc.. Then I purchased a nice little high quality bluetooth speaker (mine was about $8O.00) and then presto, you just use your smart phone or whatever to wirelessly play nature sounds. My iTunes has a repeat option so it just plays over and over. I have a bunch of different nature sounds, depending on what works best at the time. The high quality speaker (it's only about 8 inches long) is nice because the sounds are quite realistic.
